The power of doubling describes repeated multiplication by 2. Starting with an amount A, after n doublings the result is A × 2n. It is a descriptive phrase for exponential growth, not the name of one uniquely defined mathematical operation.

What does “power of doubling” mean?

To double a number, multiply it by 2. Repeating that operation produces a sequence in which each value is twice the one before it. For example, starting at 3 gives 3, 6, 12, 24: after three completed doublings, the value is 24.

This is exponential growth: the quantity is multiplied by a constant factor at each step. In a geometric sequence, that factor is called the common ratio; for doubling, the common ratio is 2. The New York State Common Core lesson on exponential growth uses this doubling pattern to develop the formula f(n) = A × 2n (New York State Common Core Mathematics Curriculum, Lesson 5).

How do you calculate a doubling sequence?

When counting completed doublings from zero

If the starting amount is A, count the starting amount as step zero. After n doublings, the value is:

Value after n doublings = A × 2n

For a starting amount of 3, the values at steps 0, 1, 2, and 3 are 3, 6, 12, and 24. At step zero, no doubling has happened, so the amount is still 3.

When the first term is numbered 1

If a sequence begins with A at position 1, then position k is A × 2k−1. The exponent is one less than the position because the first term is the starting value, not a doubling. For instance, a chessboard sequence with 1 grain on square 1 has 2 grains on square 2 and 4 on square 3: its term on square k is 2k−1. The New York State lesson explicitly distinguishes this one-based sequence from counting doublings from step zero.

How is doubling different from adding 2?

Doubling and adding 2 are different rules. The expression 2n means 2 multiplied by n; as n increases by 1, its value increases by 2. The expression 2n means 2 raised to the power n; as n increases by 1, its value is multiplied by 2.

Rule Change from one input to the next Example values for inputs 1, 2, 3, 4
2n (linear) Add 2 2, 4, 6, 8
2n (exponential) Multiply by 2 2, 4, 8, 16

Clear exponent formatting matters: in plain text, “2n” and “2^n” can be mistaken for each other even though they describe different growth.

What happens when a penny doubles every day?

The answer depends on whether you mean the amount on a particular day or the total accumulated across days, and on how the first day is counted. In the convention used by the APES Lab handout, day 1 starts at $0.01; the amount on day k is $0.01 × 2k−1.

On day 30, that convention gives $5,368,709.12. Adding the amounts paid on all 30 days gives a different figure: $10,737,418.23. The first is the amount on the final day; the second is the cumulative total across the 30 payments. These figures follow the starting convention in the handout, APES Lab: The Power of Doubling.

How can you check a doubling calculation?

  • Identify the starting amount.
  • Confirm whether the first term is numbered 1 or the starting amount is step 0.
  • Count completed doublings, not simply the listed position.
  • Check the interval: a daily doubling, for example, means one multiplication by 2 per day.
  • Determine whether the question asks for a final term or a sum of multiple terms.

For practice recognizing powers of two as successive doublings, the New Zealand Ministry of Education’s NZ Maths resource includes a powers-of-two table and shows 20 = 1 and 21 = 2 (Powerful Numbers).
