It stores folder locations—not individual program files. On Windows, those directories are separated by semicolons; on non-Windows systems, PowerShell documentation describes colon-separated entries.
What PATH does
When you run a command such as a program name rather than its full file path, the command interpreter needs to locate the executable. PATH provides directories to search. Adding a program’s directory to PATH can let you launch it by name from a shell without first navigating to that directory.
PATH is not a list of commands or executable filenames. It is a list of directory locations. Microsoft’s PowerShell environment-variable documentation defines $Env:PATH as a list of folder locations searched for executable files.
How PATH is written on Windows
Windows PATH entries are separated by semicolons. For example, a value can contain several directory paths separated by ;. Do not use commas or spaces as the separator. PowerShell’s documentation describes colon-separated PATH entries on non-Windows platforms, so the delimiter depends on the operating system.

How Command Prompt searches for a command
In Windows Command Prompt, enter path to display the current command search path. The path command can also set the path for that command environment. Microsoft documents that Command Prompt searches the current directory before directories listed in PATH, then checks PATH directories in their listed order. When matching filenames have different executable extensions, the documented default order is .exe, .com, .bat, then .cmd. See Microsoft’s Command Prompt path command reference.
That means PATH order can affect which matching program is found, but PATH is not the only factor in Windows executable resolution: current-directory handling and executable extensions also matter.

Inspecting and changing PATH in a shell
Command Prompt
- Display the current command path by entering
path. - Use
setto change an environment variable in the current Command Prompt environment. Such a change is not, by itself, a persistent system or user setting. - When setting a PATH value in that shell, semicolons separate directories. Appending
%PATH%retains the existing value in the command’s new value.
Microsoft documents the set command at set.
PowerShell
- Display the current process’s PATH value with
$Env:PATH. - PowerShell’s environment provider manages environment variables in the current console. A change made there applies to that process environment rather than automatically becoming a persistent user or system setting.

Current-shell changes versus persistent changes
Each process inherits environment variables from its parent process. As a result, changing PATH in one shell affects that shell’s environment, while a persistent user or system change is a separate operation. A terminal that was already open may not receive a later persistent change. Even a newly opened terminal can inherit an older value if it was launched by a parent application that still has the old environment.

For ordinary interactive edits to the persistent Windows PATH, use the Windows Environment Variables interface. If you update a persistent value, open a terminal from a process that has picked up the updated environment, then inspect PATH there to confirm the result.

setx writes variables to the Windows master environment in the registry. By default it writes the user environment; the /m option targets the system environment. Its changes are available to future command windows, not to the current one. Microsoft also warns that setx expands variable references in the value being written and crops assigned content beyond 1024 characters. Rewriting a long PATH with this command can therefore remove references or truncate entries. See Microsoft’s setx command reference.

Use the Environment Variables interface for routine persistent edits. If you do use setx, preserve the intended existing entries and verify the resulting PATH in a newly opened shell.
