The Open Group is a global consortium that develops and supports technology standards, open source initiatives, and certification programs. It is best known for the TOGAF Standard for enterprise architecture and the ArchiMate Specification, a language for modeling enterprise architecture.

What does The Open Group do?

The Open Group brings customers, technology suppliers, tool vendors, integrators, academics, and consultants together to develop technology standards and related initiatives. It describes its vision as “Boundaryless Information Flow” through global interoperability that is secure, reliable, and timely. Its work includes building consensus around requirements, integrating specifications with open source technologies, and providing certification services. The Open Group describes its role and membership on its Who We Are page.

It is a standards and certification organization, not a software vendor. Its standards are intended to support openness and interoperability; they do not, by themselves, guarantee a particular business result.

What is the difference between The Open Group, TOGAF, and ArchiMate?

These names refer to different things: The Open Group is the consortium; TOGAF and ArchiMate are standards associated with it, with distinct purposes.

Term What it is Purpose
The Open Group A global consortium and standards organization Develops and supports standards, open source initiatives, and certification programs
TOGAF An enterprise architecture framework and standard Provides architecture guidance; The Open Group identifies its current standard page as the 10th Edition
ArchiMate An open, independent enterprise architecture modeling language Describes, analyzes, and visualizes relationships among enterprise architecture domains

What is the TOGAF Standard?

TOGAF is The Open Group’s enterprise architecture standard. Its 10th Edition combines fundamental content with a set of series guides. The organization provides a digital edition of the standard along with certification paths, training, and self-study resources. See The Open Group’s TOGAF page for the edition and available materials.

What is ArchiMate?

ArchiMate is a modeling language for describing and visualizing how parts of an enterprise architecture relate to one another. It is not a replacement name for TOGAF: TOGAF supplies framework guidance, while ArchiMate supplies a notation and concepts for modeling architecture. The Open Group offers an ArchiMate certification program and training resources on its ArchiMate page.

What other standards and certifications does it offer?

Beyond TOGAF and ArchiMate, The Open Group names the IT4IT Reference Architecture and Open FAIR Body of Knowledge among its standards. Its certification work includes examination-based credentials for individuals as well as programs that certify products, tools, and processes. The specific exams, learning resources, and conformance programs vary by certification; consult the organization’s certification information for current details.

Certification is a separate program from the standards themselves. An individual credential assesses specified knowledge, while product or process certification concerns conformance to a defined program; neither should be read as a blanket guarantee of business outcomes. The Open Group provides licensing and standards information for its materials and programs.
