The giant bird seen in Helheim in God of War (2018) is often identified by players as Hraesvelgr, the giant bird associated with Helheim in Norse tradition. But the game does not officially name the creature in the sources available, so Hraesvelgr is a plausible interpretation—not a confirmed in-game identity.
What is the bird in the background?
It is a huge environmental creature visible in Helheim. The most common proposed name is Hraesvelgr, but the identification has not been confirmed by an official game source. The mythological connection makes the suggestion plausible; it does not prove that the developers intended that specific identity. A secondary explainer reports the common identification while noting the lack of confirmation: the explainer on the Helheim bird.

Is it one of Odin’s Ravens?
No. The giant bird is distinct from the smaller Odin’s Ravens that players find as collectibles. Santa Monica Studio’s Realm Summaries lists six Odin’s Ravens in Helheim; that count applies to the collectibles, not the distant creature.

A separate Odin’s Ravens guide for Helheim likewise covers collectible ravens. It does not identify the giant bird.
#1 Best Overall
- Physical combat over the shoulder free camera brings the action closer than ever combat in God of war is up close frenetic and unflinching. Kratos' Axes powerful, magic and multi faceted is a brutal weapon as well as a versatile tool for exploration
- Midgard and beyond: Set within the untamed forests, mountains, and realms of Norse lore, God of war features a distinctly new setting with its own pantheon of creatures, monsters, and gods
- Vicious, physical combat with an over the shoulder free camera that brings the player closer to the action than ever before
What is confirmed about the creature?
The official sources establish the game and its setting, but do not name the bird. PlayStation’s official page for God of War identifies it as a Norse-setting game and gives its original release date as April 20, 2018. Santa Monica Studio’s realm summary confirms the Helheim collectible count, not the giant bird’s identity.
So the careful answer is: players generally think the bird is Hraesvelgr, but God of War (2018) does not officially identify it in the sources cited here.
