Is Mapbox an API or an SDK?
It is both a web-service platform and a set of SDK-backed ways to build maps. The distinction is about how you use it:
- Direct HTTPS API calls: Your application sends requests to a particular Mapbox service, such as Directions or Geocoding. This suits server-side processing or a focused request where you need data rather than an interactive map interface.
- Mapbox GL JS: A JavaScript library for displaying and interacting with maps in a web application.
- Maps SDKs for iOS and Android: Native mobile options for map experiences in those platforms.
Mapbox’s Maps documentation describes both the mapping APIs and integration through GL JS and its mobile SDKs (Maps APIs). An SDK can handle map rendering and interaction; it does not mean every operation is the same as a direct REST request or has the same billing unit.

For geocoding in particular, do not choose solely by request volume. Mapbox distinguishes Temporary and Permanent Geocoding, and its pricing page separately lists Search Box and geocoding products. How to use Mapbox for maps, geocoding, or routes
- Identify the operation. Decide whether you need to render a map, retrieve tiles or a static image, search for a place, geocode an address, or calculate a route. Each operation belongs to a different service.
- Choose a direct API or SDK. Use GL JS or a mobile Maps SDK for an interactive client map; call the matching HTTPS endpoint when your application needs service data directly.
- Check product-specific access and terms. Set up the Mapbox account and access token required by the selected service, and review the product documentation for its request format, token handling, and usage rules.
- Build around that endpoint’s response. Handle errors and empty results, and keep credentials appropriately protected for the application architecture. Do not assume an endpoint’s behavior or quota applies to another Mapbox product.
- Estimate usage and validate before launch. Identify whether billing is by map load, request, session, or monthly active user, then compare expected demand with the current pricing and rate-limit documentation.

What are Mapbox API rate limits?
Rate limits cap how quickly a particular service accepts requests; they are distinct from monthly free usage or billing thresholds. Mapbox’s API overview lists the following figures as accessed in 2026:
