Apple says its matte, nano-textured surface is designed to reduce glare, reflections and the visibility of the crease. Apple hardware engineering VP Kate Bergeron has said the layer can be replaced, but her reported comments do not explain who performs the work or provide a do-it-yourself procedure.
What is the replaceable layer?
Apple describes the inner screen’s surface as a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer made from custom polymer. Its matte finish is intended to reduce glare and reflections and make the fold crease less noticeable. Apple says the polymer has up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry; its announcement does not name the comparison materials or give a test method. Apple’s product announcement describes the construction but does not identify the layer as an off-the-shelf protector.
The layer covers a more complex folding display assembly. Apple describes high-strength glass above and below the folding panel, custom adhesives that let layers move relative to one another as the phone bends, and a titanium plate beneath them. The Duo’s inner display is 7.6 inches, while its outer display is 5.4 inches. Apple does not publish a complete engineering diagram in the cited announcement.
How does it work?
The polymer cover forms the exposed surface of the inner display. Its nano-textured matte finish is designed to scatter reflected light, helping reduce glare and reflections. Apple also says the matte coating minimizes how visible the crease appears. That is a design goal, not a claim that the crease disappears or will remain unchanged with use.

Under the cover, the display stack is built to flex: Apple says custom adhesives let layers glide relative to one another as the phone bends, relieving bend stress. The cover layer and the folding panel therefore have different roles. Replacing the cover layer does not mean replacing the whole folding display, though an inspection is needed to determine what is actually damaged.
What does “replaceable” mean?
In an interview with creator @angietutorials, Apple vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron said, as quoted by 9to5Mac: “The matte display coating does a really nice job of, I’ll say minimizing the crease.” She also said: “It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”

Those remarks establish that Apple designed the cover layer to be replaceable. They do not spell out a service procedure, say whether Apple or an authorized provider carries out the replacement, specify eligibility, or establish a customer self-service option. Android Authority likewise cautions against assuming that an inner foldable-screen layer should be treated like an ordinary peel-off protector; that is the outlet’s interpretation, not a quoted Apple prohibition. The cited sources do not verify a compatible third-party replacement film or a safe at-home alternative.
How much does replacement cost?
9to5Mac reported a $19 cover-layer replacement fee listed for AppleCare+. That is a secondary report of an AppleCare+ service amount, not a confirmed universal price, an uncovered price, or a do-it-yourself part cost. The outlet said the out-of-coverage price was unknown at the time of its report.

Bergeron said Apple had engineered the cover layer to wear over as long a period as possible. The cited material does not give a replacement interval, quantified lifespan, named wear test, or long-term user data. It also does not establish that a replacement restores a literal “day-one” appearance or performance. If the screen’s surface changes or the display itself appears damaged, have the device assessed rather than assuming the cover alone is responsible.
