For most Samsung refrigerators in the U.S., set the fresh-food compartment to 38°F and the freezer to -2°F. Your model’s manual takes precedence if it recommends different settings. These are target settings; food-safety limits are separate: keep refrigerated food below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F.
Recommended Samsung fridge and freezer settings
Samsung’s U.S. guidance recommends 38°F for the refrigerator and -2°F for the freezer on most models. Some control panels show bars rather than temperatures; Samsung recommends three lit bars for each compartment on those models. Check your model’s manual if it specifies another setting. Some models have a different recommendation
Recommendations are not identical across every Samsung refrigerator. For example, the manual for the Dacor DRF36C500SR recommends 37°F (3°C) for the refrigerator and 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer. Use the manual for your exact model rather than applying that example—or the general setting—to every appliance. DRF36C500SR manual and support
Set points versus food-safety limits
A recommended control setting is not the same as the maximum safe temperature for food. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says refrigerated food should be kept below 40°F and frozen food below 0°F. Those are safety limits, not the temperatures to choose as your appliance’s targets. Samsung U.S. guidance

For Samsung refrigerators sold in Canada, Samsung gives the limits as below 4°C (40°F) for refrigerated food and at or below -18°C (0°F) for frozen food, citing Health Canada. The recommendation there is 3°C (38°F) for the refrigerator and -19°C (-2°F) for the freezer. Follow the regional guidance and your model manual. Samsung Canada temperature guidance
How to check the actual temperature
The number on a control panel is a setting, not a direct reading from every spot inside the compartment. Samsung notes that readings can vary by location: the back and bottom may be colder, and opening the door affects the temperature. Check with a refrigerator thermometer rather than relying only on the display.

- For the refrigerator, place a thermometer in a glass of water near the middle of the compartment.
- For the freezer, place the thermometer between frozen packages; do not put it in water.
- Keep the doors closed while the temperature settles. Samsung says a reading can take up to eight hours when the doors are not opened.

If your measured refrigerator temperature is above 40°F or your freezer is above 0°F, Samsung advises lowering the setting. After changing it, allow time for the compartments to cool before checking again; Samsung’s U.S. guidance says to wait 28 hours if the temperature remains too warm. A fresh setting may not immediately represent the stabilized temperature inside.

How to change the temperature
The controls differ by Samsung model and panel. Samsung describes adjustment through Family Hub or the app, Fridge and Freezer buttons, and arrow-button controls. Consult your model’s manual for the exact controls and steps; Samsung’s temperature guidance also outlines common control types.
