Owlcat Games announced The Expanse: Osiris Reborn on June 6, 2025, as a third-person sci-fi action RPG. Steam categorizes it as a single-player action RPG. Players customize a captain who may be Earther, Martian, or Belter, recruit specialists, and command a ship.

The game is set in the universe of The Expanse, the franchise represented by both novels and a television show. Its story is a new game narrative; the announced premise does not establish that players must know the books or show to follow it. The setting spans human settlements such as Luna, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt, and the game’s descriptions name Ganymede, Ceres, Mars, and Luna among its locations. Steam also describes ruined habitats and political strongholds.
What is the story?
The player character and their identical twin, J, join Pinkwater Security. During shore leave on Eros, a station lockdown and massacre leave the protagonist separated from friends and colleagues. The pair escape aboard an experimental ship belonging to the enemy, and the crisis grows into a wider conspiracy and pursuit by a powerful adversary. This is the spoiler-light premise described by Owlcat’s community manager, Gala Dolgikh, in Xbox Wire’s announcement; further plot turns have not been revealed in that description.

The crew has distinct roles in the setup. Zafar is a mechanic who helps guide an early mission. Regina is a networker who can help find allies and provide ranged support. Teo is the medic aboard the ship Gemini, Michael is a mercenary associated with a competitor, and J is the protagonist’s twin. The beta preview featured Zafar; the other characters are described as potential later crew members.
How does the gameplay work?
Owlcat describes dynamic third-person combat built around cover, guns, abilities, gadgets, and companion support. Two companions can accompany the player in the field. Other crew members may help remotely by disabling systems or drawing enemy attention, and players can issue real-time commands during combat.

Weapons, cover, and gadgets
A March 2026 beta preview described shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, pistols, and submachine guns, as well as destructible cover and grenades. Shown gadget examples included a tactical scanner, small drones, and an engine-equipped grenade designed for zero-gravity combat. The Exploits system lets companions use combat openings to attack groups of enemies. These are features described in beta material or as planned systems, not a final-game review.
Missions, progression, and choices
The beta showcased skill progression, fully voiced dialogue, and cut-scenes alongside its combat. Owlcat says missions include consequential choices, while Steam’s description says companion relationships can improve or deteriorate according to the player’s choices and leadership. Those are announced design features; their full scope and results in the finished game remain to be seen.

Owlcat made a beta available to eligible Founders on April 22, 2026. The publisher said the beta included a full early-game mission and showcased mechanics, gunplay, progression, voiced dialogue, and cut-scenes. Owlcat estimated that completing it would take one to two hours, depending on play style, and cautioned that beta performance could vary by hardware and might not reflect the finished game. The beta was offered to people who purchased Miller’s Pack or the Collector’s Edition; it is distinct from access to the eventual full release. Details about physical items included with either edition are not established by the cited announcements.

There is no specific launch day announced in the cited listings. Owlcat’s March 26, 2026 announcement gives a planned spring 2027 window, while Steam currently lists Q2 2027 and says the game is not yet available there.
