The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is Ethereum’s shared execution environment: it lets network nodes run smart-contract bytecode under common rules and produce consistent state changes. It is not Solidity, a wallet, or one specific program. The EVM processes instructions using transaction context and the current blockchain state, while gas meters and limits the work a transaction can perform.
What the EVM does
Ethereum nodes use the EVM to execute transactions that interact with smart contracts. The EVM defines how instructions are processed, what data they can use, and how execution affects Ethereum’s state. The same protocol rules let different node implementations reach the same result from the same valid transaction and state.
The EVM is an abstract machine model, not a physical computer. Execution clients implement that model in software; examples of standalone EVM implementations named by Ethereum.org’s EVM documentation include Py-EVM, evmone, ethereumjs-vm, and revm. These examples do not establish that the implementations have identical performance or are interchangeable products.
How a smart contract reaches the EVM
- Write the contract: Developers commonly use higher-level languages such as Solidity or Vyper.
- Compile it: A compiler translates the source into bytecode made up of low-level instructions called opcodes. See Ethereum.org’s guide to compiling smart contracts.
- Deploy the bytecode: A transaction creates a contract account containing code on Ethereum.
- Invoke the contract: A transaction or an internal message call can cause the EVM to execute that code.
- Apply the result: If execution completes successfully, its permitted changes are applied to Ethereum’s state. If execution fails, the applicable rules determine which changes are reverted.
During execution, code can access context such as the caller, transferred value, input data, block information, and remaining gas. The EVM’s rules define how this context is exposed and how instructions use it. The Ethereum.org Yellow Paper tutorial introduces this model; it was published on 2022-05-15 and is an explanatory guide, not a replacement for current protocol rules.

The EVM’s main data areas
The EVM is described as a stack machine with a maximum depth of 1,024 items; each item is a 256-bit word. Its data areas have different lifetimes and purposes, so memory should not be confused with either transient or persistent storage.
| Data area | What it is for | How long it lasts |
|---|---|---|
| Stack | Holds the words that instructions use as operands and results. | Used during execution; the EVM machine model limits its depth to 1,024 items. |
| Memory | Temporary, word-addressed working data for execution. | Does not persist between transactions. |
| Transient storage | Transaction-scoped key-value data accessed with TSTORE and TLOAD; internal calls can share it during the transaction. |
Cleared when the transaction ends; it is not committed to global persistent state. |
| Persistent contract storage | Contract data held in the account’s persistent storage and Ethereum’s global state. | Persists as part of blockchain state unless changed by later execution. |
The 1,024-item stack depth, 256-bit words, and data-area descriptions are machine-model details reported by Ethereum.org, not measurements of network usage or speed.

What gas means in EVM execution
Gas is the unit Ethereum uses to account for computational effort. Executing contract instructions consumes gas, and transaction fees depend on gas used and the price per unit; payment is in ETH. Contract interactions generally require more computation than a simple payment. The amount of gas supplied also limits how much work execution can attempt. See Ethereum.org’s technical overview of gas and fees.
If execution runs out of gas, its state changes are reverted, but the gas supplied is still consumed. A failed transaction is therefore not necessarily free. The 2022 Yellow Paper tutorial describes gas as a way to prevent execution from running indefinitely and calls the EVM “quasi-Turing-complete”; that phrase explains the intuition, while current behavior is governed by the applicable protocol rules.

Bytecode, opcodes, and checking deployed code
Opcodes tell the EVM what to do. They cover operations such as arithmetic, logic, moving data, controlling execution flow, and accessing blockchain-specific information. The exact instruction set and costs can depend on protocol revisions, and some opcode gas costs are dynamic.
Ethereum.org’s opcode table is a useful orientation guide, but its authors caution that readers needing rigor or certainty about edge cases should consult the Jello Paper or a client implementation. For exact gas schedules or fork-dependent behavior, check the specification or implementation applicable to the network and protocol revision in question.

Source-code verification compares published contract source with the bytecode deployed on-chain. It helps readers assess whether the advertised source corresponds to the deployed code; it does not prove that the contract is secure or that its design is safe. Ethereum.org explains the process in its guide to verifying smart contracts.

The EVM is part of Ethereum’s protocol, and its rules evolve through protocol revisions. The Yellow Paper is a formal specification reference, while Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) can amend protocol rules. The Ethereum.org EVM documentation outlines this relationship.

The available Yellow Paper PDF is a Berlin-era version, so it should not be treated on its own as the complete specification for current behavior. When an implementation detail matters—especially opcode availability, gas costs, or fork-dependent behavior—identify the network and protocol revision and consult the applicable specification or a client implementation.
