Front-end development builds the interface and interactions that run in a user’s browser. Back-end development handles server-side requests, application logic, and data. Full-stack development spans work on both sides. The distinction is primarily about where code runs and what it does—not which programming language is used.
What front-end development does
Front-end developers build the parts of a website or web application that people see and use in a browser. Their work can include page structure, layout, navigation, forms, and interactive features, as well as connecting interface elements to information supplied by a server.
HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are common front-end technologies. The role is not limited to visual styling: browser-side code also governs behavior, such as responding to user actions and checking form input. What works in one browser may behave differently in another. MDN’s introduction to web development describes client-side code as running in the browser and handling a page’s structure, presentation, and behavior.
What back-end development does
Back-end developers work on server-side parts of an application. When the browser sends a request, server code can interpret it, validate submitted information, apply application rules, read or change data, and send an appropriate response. Dynamic sites commonly rely on server-side code to retrieve data from a database and prepare content for the browser.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Back-end code runs on a web server. Python, PHP, Ruby, C#, Java, and JavaScript with Node.js are examples of technologies used on the server; databases and server frameworks may also be part of the work. These are examples, not a fixed list of requirements. JavaScript can run in the browser and on a server, so a language alone does not determine whether a task is front end or back end. The execution environment and responsibility are what matter. See MDN’s server-side website programming overview.
What full-stack development means
A full-stack developer works across front-end and back-end tasks, such as implementing a browser feature and the server behavior or data access it depends on. The term describes work spanning application layers; it does not guarantee equal expertise in each layer or mean that one person owns every operational responsibility.

The exact scope depends on the project and how its team divides responsibilities. MDN treats back-end topics as distinct from front-end fundamentals while noting that full-stack learning can cover both. Its curriculum is one example of how those areas can be taught as related but separate subjects.
Front end vs. back end vs. full stack
| Area | Where the work primarily runs | Typical focus | Common examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front end | User’s browser | Interface, layout, presentation, and interaction | HTML, CSS, JavaScript |
| Back end | Web server | Request processing, validation, application logic, and data access | Python, PHP, Ruby, C#, Java, JavaScript/Node.js; databases and server frameworks |
| Full stack | Browser and server layers | Work spanning the interface through server behavior and data flow | A combination of front-end and back-end tools |
These categories are a useful way to understand the work, not universal job specifications. A web application may also involve a database and web server, and project size and team organization affect how responsibilities are shared. MDN’s explanation of how the web works provides more detail on how browser and server roles fit together.

How the front end and back end work together
- The browser makes a request. A user action—such as opening a page or submitting a form—can prompt the browser to contact a server.
- The server handles the request. Server-side code can validate the information, apply application logic, and retrieve or update data.
- The server returns a response. The browser receives the result, which may include information the page needs.
- The interface presents the result. Browser code displays the information and continues to support user interaction.
For example, on an online store, a product page and shopping-cart interactions are front-end concerns. Server logic that validates an order and reads or stores related data is back-end work. A developer who contributes to both parts may be doing full-stack work. This illustrates the distinction; it does not mean every company assigns those tasks in the same way.

How to tell which area a task belongs to
- Ask where the code runs. Code running in the user’s browser is client-side; code running on a web server is server-side.
- Look at the problem being solved. Interface layout and interaction point to front-end work. Processing requests and handling application data point to back-end work.
- Follow the data flow. A task that connects the browser interface to server behavior may involve coordination across both areas.
- Don’t classify by language alone. The same language, including JavaScript, can be used on both sides.
