A URL is an address that tells a browser or another program where to find one Internet resource. A website is the larger collection of linked web pages and related resources that share a site identity. In short: a URL is a locator; a website is a collection.
One website can contain thousands of URLs, and a URL can identify something that is not a web page at all, such as an image or video.
URL vs. website at a glance
| Term | What it is | Example or role |
|---|---|---|
| URL | A text address specifying where a resource can be found | https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn_web_development/ |
| Website | A collection of linked pages and associated resources sharing a site identity | All the pages, images, scripts and other content published under a site such as MDN |
| Domain name | A human-readable name identifying a location used in many URLs | developer.mozilla.org |
| Web page | A document that a browser can display | An article, product page or contact page |
| Web server | Computer hardware or software that stores and sends requested resources | The system that returns a page when its URL is requested |
These terms describe different layers. The URL is the address, the page is a document, the website is the collection, and the server delivers the files.
What is a URL?
URL means Uniform Resource Locator. It is a text string that specifies where a resource can be found on the Internet. A resource may be a web page, image, video, stylesheet, download, API response or another item. URLs are therefore not limited to a site’s home page or even to websites.

For example, these URLs identify progressively more specific resources:
https://developer.mozilla.org— a simple address for a site location.https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Learn_web_development/— a path to a particular area or resource.https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/search?q=URL— a search request with a query parameter.
When you paste an absolute URL into a browser’s address bar, it contains enough information for the browser to resolve the destination without relying on another document.
Parts of an HTTP or HTTPS URL
Consider https://cloudflare.com/learning/:
- Scheme (protocol):
httpstells the client which communication method to use.httpis another common web scheme. - Authority: This section can include the domain name and, when needed, a port.
- Domain:
cloudflare.comis the human-readable host name. - Path:
/learning/identifies a location beneath the host. - Query parameters: A section beginning with
?, such as?q=URL, passes extra name-and-value information to the destination. - Fragment: A section beginning with
#points to a position or subresource-specific location within the retrieved document.
Not every URL displays every component. Which pieces are required depends on the scheme and context. A fragment is handled by the browser after retrieval and is not sent to the server as part of the HTTP request.
Absolute and relative URLs
An absolute URL includes the destination context, normally including a scheme and domain, for example https://example.com/docs/start.html. A relative URL omits some of that context because it is resolved against the URL of the document containing it. An HTML link such as images/logo.png can therefore work inside a page hosted at https://example.com/docs/, where the browser supplies the missing scheme and domain.
Relative references are convenient inside a site but are not generally sufficient when you are entering a destination from scratch in the browser bar.
URLs are not only for web pages
HTTP and HTTPS URLs can point to images, videos, files, feeds and API endpoints. URL schemes also exist for functions outside ordinary web-page navigation, including email and file transfer. The word URL describes the locating mechanism, not the type of content returned.
What is a website?
A website is a collection of linked web pages and associated resources that share a site identity, commonly a domain name. Its resources can include HTML documents, images, video, fonts, JavaScript, stylesheets, downloads and data services.
A typical site might have:
- A home page at one URL.
- Article, product, account and help pages at different URLs.
- Images and downloadable files with their own URLs.
- Shared scripts and styles that are requested behind the scenes.
- Navigation links connecting the pages into a coherent collection.
The domain helps identify the site, but it is not the site itself and it is not the complete URL. A website can also use several subdomains or domains while presenting one organization or service to visitors.

Single-page applications
Some websites are single-page applications (SPAs). The browser initially loads an application shell, then JavaScript replaces the displayed content as you navigate. The visible view can change without a full document request or a new URL for every state. In other cases, the application updates the URL with a path or fragment even though the page is not reloaded.
This does not make the URL and website the same thing. The site remains the broader application and its resources; the URL remains the locator for the document or state the client is addressing.
How a URL, page, website and server work together
- You enter or follow a URL, such as
https://example.com/products. - The browser resolves the domain to a server and sends a request using the URL’s scheme and other applicable information.
- The web server returns an HTML document or another response.
- The browser may request additional resources—images, stylesheets, scripts and fonts—using their own URLs.
- The browser assembles those responses into the web page you see.
The page is the displayed document. The website is the connected collection to which the page belongs. The server is the system that hosts and sends the resources. The URL is the address used to request one of them.
If a site is unavailable, the cause may be a server, network, DNS, application or configuration problem. A URL can remain correctly formed even when the server currently cannot answer it.

Domain name versus URL
A domain name is one component of many URLs. In https://cloudflare.com/learning/, cloudflare.com is the domain, https is the scheme and /learning/ is the path. Calling the domain the “URL” loses information about the protocol and the specific resource.
Typing only a domain may still lead to a page because the browser or service supplies defaults, such as a scheme and a home-page path. The resulting complete address is still a URL, while the domain remains only its host-name component.
Practical ways to tell which term you need
- Use URL when you mean one address to copy, open, request, bookmark or share.
- Use website when you mean the entire online presence made of many connected pages and resources.
- Use domain name when you mean the host name portion, such as
example.com. - Use web page when you mean one browser-displayable document.
- Use web server when discussing the system that stores, processes and delivers the content.
Examples
| Statement | Technically precise version |
|---|---|
| “Send me the website.” | “Send me the URL for the page you mean,” if one page is intended. |
| “The domain is broken.” | “The site or server is unavailable,” unless the domain-resolution problem is known. |
| “That URL is the website.” | “That URL points to the website’s home page or another resource.” |
| “The image is part of the page’s URL.” | “The image is a separate resource with its own URL, loaded by the page.” |
Using a URL to capture a page or resource
If your goal is to turn a page URL into a visual asset for documentation, testing or publishing, a browser can load the URL and capture the rendered result. The capture may need to wait for JavaScript, lazy-loaded images, consent dialogs or other overlays. An image URL can be captured too, but it will produce the image resource rather than the surrounding website.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture, it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

“A URL always opens a website.”
No. It may open a standalone image, video, download, API response or another resource. The URL identifies the target; the target’s media type determines how the client handles it.
“Every change on a website creates a new URL.”
No. SPAs can replace content in the current document without changing the address. Some applications use paths or fragments to make states linkable, while others do not.
“The domain is the server.”
No. A domain is a name resolved through Internet naming systems. It can point to infrastructure that changes over time, and one server can host multiple domains.
“A valid URL guarantees that the page works.”
No. Syntax and availability are separate. DNS failures, network outages, server errors, authentication requirements, redirects or application problems can prevent successful retrieval.

The browser says the address is invalid
- Check for spaces, unmatched punctuation or a missing scheme such as
https://. - Encode characters that have special meaning in a URL, particularly when constructing one in code.
- If the address is relative, open it from the document or replace it with an absolute URL.
The URL opens the wrong page
- Inspect the path, query string and fragment; a small spelling or capitalization difference may identify another resource.
- Check redirects and whether the application rewrites routes.
- For a private page, confirm that the required login or authorization is present.
The domain works but a page does not
- Test the exact path rather than only the home page.
- Look for a 404 (resource not found), 403 (access denied) or 5xx (server-side) response.
- Consider whether the page depends on JavaScript, cookies, geolocation or a particular device view.
A screenshot is blank or covered by overlays
- Wait for a selector, a delay or network idle so client-side content can finish loading.
- Handle consent banners and hide newsletter or chat elements before capture.
- Verify that bot protection has not served a challenge instead of the intended page.
FAQ
Can two different URLs identify the same page?
Yes. Redirects, URL aliases, optional trailing slashes, tracking parameters and canonicalization can cause multiple addresses to reach substantially the same content.
Best Value
Can a website have no domain name?
A public website normally needs a resolvable host name or address for visitors, but a site can also run locally, on an internal network or behind an access-controlled host that is not publicly registered.
Does changing a URL fragment reload the server page?
Normally no. The browser can use the new fragment to move within the already retrieved document or let client-side code select a view without sending the fragment in the request.
Is a homepage the same as a website?
No. A homepage is one page, usually the site’s primary entry point. The website includes that page plus the other pages and resources connected to it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can one URL point to different content at different times?
Yes. A server or application can generate different responses based on authentication, cookies, location, device, time or changing data, even when the visible URL is unchanged.
Why do some shared links contain long text after a question mark?
That section is the query string. It carries parameters such as searches, filters, campaign identifiers or application state; it is still part of the URL, not a separate website.
