Short answer: A screenshot is a static image of visible screen content. A snapshot is a context-dependent record of a state—sometimes another name for a screen capture, but often a saved state of a system, virtual device, process list, or data that can be inspected, resumed, reverted, or restored.
The reliable way to tell them apart is to ask what object was captured, what information it preserves, and what the saved item is intended to do. Product terminology is not consistent, so the feature’s own documentation is the final authority.

What a screenshot captures
A screenshot is a visual recording. It contains the pixels that were rendered on a display at capture time, either for the entire screen or for a chosen area. Windows Snipping Tool documents full-screen, window, rectangular, and freeform modes, illustrating the usual scope choices: capture everything, one window, or a custom shape. Its consumer-facing description also uses “snapshot” for a screen capture, which is why the words can overlap in everyday software.
A screenshot normally does not include hidden application state, processes, unsaved database records, or the ability to reopen the exact running session. If a dialog, animation frame, or cursor is not rendered in the selected area, it is not part of the image. Conversely, sensitive information that is visible—account names, messages, or tokens—can become part of the file.

Common screenshot scopes
- Full screen: all visible displays or the selected display, depending on the tool.
- Window: one application window, often including its title bar.
- Rectangle or freeform: a deliberately selected region.
- Programmatic page capture: a browser-rendered page saved as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF by a screenshot service.
What “snapshot” means in technical products
“Snapshot” has no single universal computing definition. NIST’s glossary, citing NIST SP 800-125, defines it in one specialized context as “A record of the state of a running image, generally captured as the differences between an image and the current state.” That is a technical definition, not a rule that every product follows.
Operating-system and diagnostic snapshots
In Microsoft Tool Help, a snapshot is a read-only copy of the current state of one or more lists held in system memory: processes, threads, modules, and heaps. It is data for inspection, not a picture of the desktop and not automatically a restorable backup. The exact definition is documented in Microsoft’s “Snapshots of the System”.
Virtual-device snapshots
Android Studio’s emulator snapshots preserve a virtual device’s state, including operating-system settings, application state, and user data. Loading one lets a developer return to a saved emulator session rather than booting and configuring it from scratch. This is a state checkpoint, not merely an image of the emulator window. Data and configuration snapshots
Canonical’s Snap documentation defines a snapd snapshot as a copy of user, system, and configuration data for one or more snaps. Such a snapshot can support backup, revert, and restore operations. It preserves selected data defined by snapd; it is not necessarily a complete disk image or a screen capture. See the Snap glossary.

Screen-history snapshots
Some consumer features use “snapshot” for captured screen content. Microsoft Recall describes periodic screen snapshots taken when the screen differs from the previous snapshot. The items are arranged in a timeline and stored and analyzed locally on the PC. In that product, the captured object is screen content, so the term overlaps with screenshot even though the feature adds automatic collection, indexing, and history. Is a snapshot just a screenshot?
Sometimes, but you cannot assume it. A product may call an ordinary screen image a snapshot, as Microsoft’s Snipping Tool and Recall examples show. In developer and infrastructure tools, however, a snapshot commonly includes structured state that a picture cannot represent.
Use this test:
- Identify the captured object. Is it visible pixels, a process list, a virtual machine or emulator, or user and configuration data?
- Check the preserved state. Does the item contain only appearance, or can it include settings, application data, memory, or differences from a base image?
- Check the operation offered afterward. Can you only open or share it, or can you inspect, resume, revert, or restore it?
- Read the product definition. The same label can describe different objects in different tools.
Examples that make the distinction clear
Documenting a bug
A support agent asks for a screenshot of an error dialog. The useful artifact is a visual image showing the message, surrounding controls, and perhaps the URL. It does not preserve the application’s internal state, so the recipient cannot continue the session from the file.

A mobile developer saves an Android Virtual Device snapshot after signing in and configuring test data. Reloading it restores the documented OS, app, and user-data state. A screenshot of the emulator would show the same screen but could not recreate the session.
Inspecting running processes
A Windows diagnostic program creates a Tool Help snapshot. It receives a read-only view of selected process, thread, module, or heap lists. No desktop image is required, and the result is intended for analysis.

Restoring snap data
A snapd snapshot contains defined user, system, and configuration data. Its value is recovery or reversion, not visual communication.
What neither term guarantees
- “Snapshot” does not always mean restorable. A read-only process-list snapshot supports inspection, while an emulator snapshot supports resuming and a snapd snapshot supports restore operations.
- A screenshot is not proof of hidden truth. It records what was visible, not whether the underlying data was correct or complete.
- Neither word specifies retention. A tool may keep one capture briefly, maintain a timeline, or store checkpoints until you delete them.
- Neither word specifies privacy. Check where files or state are stored, who can access them, and whether sensitive content is included.
- File format is not the definition. A snapshot may be a database, a structured state file, a diff, or an image, depending on the product.
Choosing the right term for your documentation
Call an artifact a screenshot when readers need a visual record: “Attach a screenshot of the error.” Call it a snapshot when the operation saves a defined state for inspection, testing, continuation, or recovery: “Load the emulator snapshot before running the test.” If a product uses a different label, quote its UI and explain the captured object.
For precise instructions, state the scope and lifecycle: “Capture the browser window as a PNG,” “Create a read-only process snapshot,” or “Save an emulator snapshot that includes app data.” This avoids suggesting that a picture can restore a session or that every checkpoint is a backup.

“The snapshot looks like a screenshot.”
Check the product definition. Recall and some consumer tools intentionally use snapshot for screen content. Verify whether the feature also records history, indexing, or metadata before treating it as an ordinary image.
“Loading the screenshot did not restore my work.”
That is expected: an image stores pixels. Use the application’s documented project save, emulator snapshot, virtual-machine checkpoint, or data backup when restoration is required.

Review what the product says it includes. Snapshots may cover selected lists, app state, or specified user/configuration data rather than every disk, process, or external service. Save required data through the product’s supported backup procedure.

“A webpage capture contains a banner or blank page.”

Can a screenshot contain metadata?
Yes. The image file may include dimensions, timestamps, application tags, or other metadata, but metadata does not turn it into a restorable system state.
Is a virtual-machine snapshot the same as a backup?
Not automatically. A snapshot is useful for a defined checkpoint, while backup durability, retention, independence from the original system, and recovery guarantees depend on the product and configuration.
Which word should an API use for a webpage image?
Use “screenshot” when the endpoint returns rendered pixels or a PDF of the page. Reserve “snapshot” for a separately defined saved state, and document exactly what it contains.
