Snipping Tool is the default built-in screenshot app in Windows 10 and Windows 11. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open its snipping overlay, choose an area or mode, and then edit, save, copy, or share the capture. Windows also has separate keyboard shortcuts for saving the entire screen directly and for copying a screenshot to the clipboard.

What is the default screenshot app?

Windows includes Snipping Tool for taking screenshots. Microsoft describes it as a way to capture all or part of the PC screen, make changes or notes, save the result, and share it. The app is built into both Windows 10 and Windows 11, so you do not need to install a third-party screenshot utility for ordinary captures.

The shortcut and the app are different things: Windows + Shift + S opens the snipping overlay, while Snipping Tool is the application that processes the capture afterward.

How to take a screenshot with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. The screen dims and the snipping controls appear.
  2. Choose a capture mode: rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform.
  3. Select the region, window, or screen you want to capture.
  4. Open the resulting notification or Snipping Tool window to edit, annotate, save, copy, or share the image.

A rectangular snip lets you drag around an exact area. A window snip captures a selected application window. A full-screen snip captures the complete display, and a freeform snip lets you draw an irregular outline. Current Windows 11 instructions also document video snipping, started with Windows + Shift + R.

Open the app from Start

Select Start, type Snipping Tool, and open the result. This is useful when you want to review earlier captures, change options, or start a snip without remembering a shortcut.

Where Windows saves screenshots

Snipping Tool captures

A capture made through the snipping overlay appears in Snipping Tool, where you can choose when and where to save it. It is not automatically placed in one universal folder merely because you used Windows + Shift + S; use the save command in the Snipping Tool window to select the destination and file name.

Windows + Print Screen

Press Windows logo key + PrtScn to save a screenshot of the screen as an image file. Microsoft documents the destination as Pictures > Screenshots. In File Explorer, open your user Pictures folder and then the Screenshots subfolder.

Print Screen alone

The PrtScn key can copy a screenshot to the clipboard instead of creating a file. Paste it into an image editor, document, email, or chat with Ctrl + V. On some systems, PrtScn is configured to open screen snipping instead; the result depends on the Windows keyboard setting and the hardware.

Why does Print Screen open Snipping Tool?

Windows has a setting that assigns the Print Screen key to screen snipping. To check it, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and look for the option that controls whether the Print Screen key opens screen snipping. Turn that option on or off according to the workflow you want.

With the setting enabled, pressing PrtScn can open the Snipping Tool overlay. With it disabled, Print Screen can behave as a clipboard capture, although keyboard firmware and manufacturer utilities may also affect the result. If you need a file saved immediately, use Windows + PrtScn rather than relying on the single-key behavior.

Which Windows screenshot method should you use?

Goal Shortcut or method Result
Capture a selected region Windows + Shift + S Opens Snipping Tool’s overlay; select rectangular, freeform, window, or full-screen mode, then edit or save.
Capture a complete screen to a file Windows + PrtScn Saves an image in Pictures > Screenshots.
Copy a screenshot for immediate pasting PrtScn, depending on settings Places the capture on the clipboard, or opens screen snipping when that setting is enabled.
Record a video snip Windows + Shift + R on current Windows 11 instructions Starts Snipping Tool’s video-snipping workflow.
Use an irregular outline Snipping Tool freeform mode Captures the area enclosed by your hand-drawn outline.

What if your keyboard has no Print Screen key?

Keyboard layouts differ. Microsoft notes that some hardware without a dedicated PrtScn button can use Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar to take a screenshot. The exact Fn labeling and behavior can vary by manufacturer, so try the shortcut on the physical keyboard and use Windows + Shift + S when you need the predictable Snipping Tool overlay.

Troubleshooting Snipping Tool and screenshot shortcuts

Windows + Shift + S does nothing

  • Press the Windows logo key and Shift together before pressing S; pressing S alone opens search or another application.
  • Try opening Snipping Tool from Start. If the app opens, use its New capture command.
  • Check whether another utility has remapped the shortcut, particularly on managed work computers or gaming keyboards.

Print Screen saves or opens the wrong thing

  • Go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and review the Print Screen screen-snipping option.
  • Use Windows + PrtScn when you specifically need a file, or use Windows + Shift + S when you want to choose a region.
  • If PrtScn only copies an image, paste it with Ctrl + V into an image editor to confirm that the clipboard capture worked.

I cannot find the screenshot file

  • For Windows + PrtScn, check Pictures > Screenshots under the correct Windows user account.
  • For Windows + Shift + S, return to the Snipping Tool notification or app and use Save; the destination is selected during that save operation.
  • Check whether OneDrive or another backup service has redirected your Pictures folder.

The capture is blank or misses a menu

  • Open the snipping overlay before dismissing the menu or tooltip you need to capture.
  • Use a window or full-screen snip when a precise drag would close the menu.
  • For protected video or other content that intentionally blocks capture, Windows may not be able to provide the underlying pixels.

The shortcut behaves differently on a laptop

Use the laptop’s Fn modifier if PrtScn is combined with another key, or try Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar on hardware without a dedicated Print Screen key. Windows + Shift + S remains the simplest route when the Windows key is available.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need automated website screenshots rather than a one-off desktop capture, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. Before capture, it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

Use the API documentation at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/ for all options, including full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element captures, dark mode, device and viewport settings, retina scale, PDF page controls, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, waits, blocked requests, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting, and the OpenAPI specification. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
