If you already have a compatible speaker, smart display, or TV that appears as a YouTube Music cast target, casting may be the cheapest option: YouTube Music Help says playback can continue after you close Chrome, the web app, or even turn off the computer. Its guidance is for YouTube Music Premium members, and it does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 playback. If you mean a public YouTube livestream rather than personal music playback, that is a different setup.
Cheapest option if you already own compatible equipment
First check what you already have. YouTube Music Help documents casting from the web app or music.youtube.com to a speaker, smart display, or TV device. It says: “When casting, your music will keep playing even if you exit Chrome, close the web app or turn off your computer.” The guidance is for YouTube Music Premium members. - Sign in to the YouTube Music web app or music.youtube.com with the account that has YouTube Music Premium.
- Make sure the speaker, smart display, or TV is available as a cast target for your setup, then select it from the cast control.
- Start the playlist and confirm playback is coming from the target device.
- Only after confirming playback on the target, close Chrome or turn off the computer. YouTube’s help page says playback continues in this casting scenario.
If you already own the endpoint and already have the required membership, this may avoid buying additional hardware. If either is missing, the cheapest total depends on your country, local membership price, and the devices you own; the official guidance does not establish one universal cost.
Other ways to keep listening
Use background play on a phone
YouTube Help identifies background play in the YouTube and YouTube Music mobile apps as a benefit for signed-in YouTube Premium members. This can suit someone who wants the phone itself to keep playing, but the phone remains part of the playback setup and needs power. Buy a speaker only if you need one
A compatible speaker can serve as a dedicated playback endpoint, but buying one is not automatically cheaper than using a device you already own. YouTube’s help describes casting to speakers, smart displays, and TVs; a YouTube blog post also describes YouTube Music on Google Home speakers. - Check your membership: The documented casting route applies to YouTube Music Premium members; mobile background playback is described as a YouTube Premium benefit.
- Compare local costs: Membership and hardware prices vary by country, and no single cheapest total can be named without those prices and your current equipment.
- Decide whether the computer or phone must turn off: The cast guidance specifically says the music can continue after the computer is turned off. Phone background playback still uses the phone as the playback device.
- Separate continued playback from an uptime promise: The cited help pages explain specific playback behavior, not a guarantee that a playlist will run without interruption every hour of every day.
Personal playlist playback is not a public YouTube livestream
