The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is an international scientific and educational organization focused on computing and information technology. It brings together educators, researchers, and professionals, and advances computing through research, education, open exchange of information, and professional and ethical standards.

What does ACM stand for?

ACM stands for the Association for Computing Machinery. It is a professional and educational society—not a computer, software product, or single publication. Its scope includes computing as a science, an engineering discipline, and a profession.

ACM’s constitution describes it as an international organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, engineering, and application of information technology while serving professional and public interests. The constitution also identifies open information exchange and high professional and ethical standards as part of that mission. ACM’s official history reproduces this wording.

What does ACM do?

ACM supports the computing community through a range of activities and resources, rather than serving just one function. Its official overview includes:

  • Research publications and conferences
  • Educational programs and professional development
  • Networking and local chapters
  • Special interest groups focused on areas of computing

These activities support ACM’s broader aim of advancing computing and sharing knowledge. ACM’s overview describes the organization and its work.

When was ACM founded?

ACM was founded at Columbia University in New York on September 15, 1947, originally under the name Eastern Association for Computing Machinery. The word “Eastern” was dropped in January 1948. The organization’s founding purpose already reached beyond building machines: it included advancing the science, development, construction, and application of machinery for computing, reasoning, and other ways of handling information. These dates and the original purpose appear in ACM’s official history.
