The Apple Neural Engine (ANE) is a machine-learning compute unit built into Apple silicon. It can run supported on-device model work alongside the CPU and GPU, with Core ML providing the software framework that coordinates execution. Its presence does not mean every AI or machine-learning task automatically runs on the Neural Engine.
What the Apple Neural Engine is
The Neural Engine is hardware: a dedicated compute device for machine-learning workloads integrated into Apple silicon. Apple’s Core ML API identifies it as a distinct compute-device type, alongside the CPU and GPU. Apple’s compute-unit documentation describes the available choices.
Core ML is software, not another name for the Neural Engine. Apple describes Core ML as using CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine resources to run models on-device while optimizing performance, memory use, and power consumption. Apple Core ML documentation
How it works with the CPU and GPU
An app uses a machine-learning model through a framework such as Core ML. Depending on the device’s hardware, the model, and the compute units the app permits, execution can use the CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, or a combination of available resources. Apple’s newer Core AI documentation also describes AI execution across these device types on Apple silicon; that documentation is labeled preliminary.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Core ML lets developers set a compute-unit policy. The documented options include allowing all available units, CPU only, CPU and GPU, or CPU and Neural Engine. If all available units are allowed, the system can select a suitable device, including the Neural Engine when available. The choice is not a promise that every model operation will run exclusively on the Neural Engine: hardware availability, supported operations, and the app’s policy all matter.
What it is used for
Apple’s July 2021 overview of the M1 chip cited video analysis, voice recognition, and image processing as machine-learning workloads that can benefit from the Neural Engine. These are examples, not a guarantee that any particular app or feature uses the ANE. The app and model determine how available compute resources are used.

What Apple’s M1 figures mean
In its July 2021 M1 overview, Apple described the M1 Neural Engine as a 16-core design capable of 11 trillion operations per second. Those are Apple’s published figures for the M1, not a current specification for every Apple chip or an independent benchmark.
The same overview said M1 offered up to 15 times faster machine-learning performance relative to the comparison Apple described there. This is a dated company claim tied to the M1-era comparison, not a universal Neural Engine speedup. It should not be used to predict the performance of a different chip, model, or app.

Does the Neural Engine matter when choosing a device?
It can matter if you use apps that run machine-learning models on-device, but the component name alone cannot tell you how fast a particular app will be. The model’s supported operations, the software’s compute policy, and the device’s overall hardware affect the route and result. Apple’s documentation explains how Core ML can choose among compute units; it does not establish a universal performance ranking in which the Neural Engine is always fastest.
For a concrete historical example, Apple’s M1 overview noted that the Neural Engine came to Mac with M1 and identified MacBook Air among M1-powered models. That illustrates the hardware’s integration in a product, rather than a requirement to buy any particular Mac.
