Andromeda, or M31, is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way: a spiral about 2.5 million light-years away that you can see without a telescope under a dark sky. One familiar claim needs an update, though: a collision with the Milky Way is not certain. A 2025 study puts the chance that the galaxies will avoid merging over the next 10 billion years close to 50%.
What is the Andromeda Galaxy?
-
It has two widely used catalog names
Andromeda is listed as M31 in the Messier catalog and as NGC 224 in the New General Catalogue. These names refer to the same galaxy. NASA’s Andromeda overview.
-
It is a spiral galaxy
M31 is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Andromeda. Its disk and spiral structure are visible in detailed images, though from Earth we see the galaxy at a steep angle rather than face-on. NASA’s Andromeda overview.

It is the nearest major galaxy to the Milky Way
NASA describes Andromeda as the nearest major galaxy to our own. There are smaller galaxies closer to the Milky Way, so “nearest major” is more precise than simply “nearest galaxy.” NASA’s Andromeda overview.

How far away is Andromeda, and can you see it?
-
It is about 2.5 million light-years away
That is the distance reported by NASA’s current Andromeda pages. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, so the light reaching us now began its journey roughly 2.5 million years ago. NASA’s Andromeda overview.
-
You can spot it without a telescope
From a dark site, Andromeda is visible to the unaided eye as a faint, diffuse patch. Light pollution and atmospheric conditions make it harder to see; binoculars or a telescope are not prerequisites, but may help with locating or framing it. NASA’s Andromeda overview; NASA’s skywatching guide.
-
Its listed apparent magnitude is 3.1
NASA gives Andromeda an apparent magnitude of 3.1. Apparent magnitude describes how bright an object appears from Earth; lower numbers indicate brighter objects. The galaxy’s extended light is spread across a broad area, so real-world visibility still depends on the sky being dark. NASA’s Hubble image page.

-
Its apparent span is about six full-Moon diameters
NASA compares Andromeda’s apparent width in the sky to roughly six full-Moon diameters. The galaxy can therefore cover a much larger area than its faint, naked-eye appearance might suggest. NASA’s Andromeda overview.
-
Its physical width is approximately 152,000 light-years
NASA lists Andromeda’s width at approximately 152,000 light-years. This is a measured estimate of its physical scale, not the size of the bright patch visible to the naked eye. NASA’s Andromeda overview; NASA’s 2024 size overview.
-
We see it tilted nearly edge-on
Andromeda’s disk is tilted about 77 degrees relative to our line of sight, making it appear nearly edge-on. That angle is why its disk looks elongated rather than circular in the sky. NASA’s Andromeda overview.
What do detailed images reveal?
-
Hubble’s 2025 panorama combines more than 600 snapshots
NASA describes a 2025 Hubble panorama assembled from over 600 overlapping snapshots. The resulting image resolves an estimated 200 million stars hotter than the Sun. That is a count for the stars visible and resolved in this panorama, not an estimate of Andromeda’s entire stellar population. NASA’s Andromeda overview.

A different Hubble mosaic covers part of the disk
A separate Hubble disk mosaic used 7,398 exposures from 411 pointings and shows more than 100 million stars in a section of Andromeda’s disk. Its coverage and star count are distinct from those of the 2025 panorama. NASA’s Hubble mosaic description.
-
The disk mixes young blue stars and dark dust lanes
Hubble images show regions of young blue stars and star formation among dark lanes of dust. These contrasting features help reveal the galaxy’s structure and activity across its disk. NASA’s Andromeda overview; NASA’s Hubble mosaic description.

M32 may be the surviving core of a galaxy
M32 is one of Andromeda’s notable satellites. NASA describes evidence that it experienced a burst of star formation a few billion years ago and says M32 may be the remnant core of a galaxy that interacted with Andromeda. The stripped-core explanation is a hypothesis, not a settled origin story. NASA’s Andromeda overview.

Will Andromeda collide with the Milky Way?
-
A merger is possible, but not inevitable
For years, popular accounts often presented a Milky Way–Andromeda collision as certain. A 2025 study reassessed the forecast using uncertainties in the Local Group’s positions, motions, and masses. It found a close to 50% probability that the galaxies will not merge within the next 10 billion years. That does not rule out a merger; it means the future outcome is uncertain rather than guaranteed. Sawala et al., Nature Astronomy (2025); NASA’s 2025 summary.
The probability is a model-based forecast, not a direct observation of the future. The study’s uncertainty in the Local Group’s measured properties changes how confidently astronomers can predict the galaxies’ long-term paths.
