A tetrel bond is a directional noncovalent interaction in which a Group 14 atom—carbon, silicon, germanium, tin, or lead—acts as an electron acceptor toward an electron-rich Lewis base. The σ-hole model explains how a locally positive region can form along the extension of a covalent bond, but electrostatics is not always the whole story: polarization, charge transfer, and molecular deformation can also matter.
What is a tetrel bond?
A tetrel bond is an attraction between a Group 14 atom acting as a Lewis-acid center and an electron-rich Lewis base. Group 14, also called the tetrel group, includes carbon, silicon, germanium, tin, and lead. The term describes a family of interactions, not one fixed bond strength or geometry; the element, its bonding environment, and the identity and charge of the base all influence the interaction. A proposed definition and discussion of the term appears in Varadwaj et al. (2022) (source).
How does a σ-hole form?
A σ-hole is a localized region of positive electrostatic potential on the outer surface of an atom covalently bonded to another atom, often on the side opposite that bond. In a tetrel-bond example, an electron-withdrawing chemical environment can leave the surface potential around the Group 14 atom anisotropic: one direction is relatively positive even though the atom or molecule as a whole need not carry a net positive charge.
An electron-rich site can approach this positive region, commonly along the extension of the covalent bond. This directional alignment is a key feature of the σ-hole model. It describes a favorable orientation between a Lewis-acid center and a Lewis base, rather than suggesting that the tetrel atom is simply a free positive ion.

Is a tetrel bond purely electrostatic?
No. Electrostatic complementarity helps explain why the base is attracted to the positive region, but it does not account for every contribution in every system. Depending on the molecules and their geometry, the interaction may also involve polarization, donation from an occupied orbital on the base into an antibonding orbital, and deformation of the interacting molecules. Reviews of tetrel bonding discuss these complementary ways of analyzing the interaction (Scheiner, 2021: perspective; Varadwaj et al., 2018: review).
These are not competing explanations from which one universal cause must be selected. Their relative importance depends on the particular tetrel center, base, and arrangement. The σ-hole is useful for understanding directionality and electrostatic potential; orbital and electron-density analyses can help describe other parts of the interaction.

How does tetrel bonding compare with hydrogen bonding?
Both terms describe directional noncovalent interactions involving an electron-accepting site and an electron-rich partner, so hydrogen bonding can be a helpful analogy. They are not interchangeable, however: a tetrel bond centers on a Group 14 atom, and its geometry and electronic contributions depend on that atom’s chemical environment.

| Comparison | Tetrel bond | Hydrogen bond |
|---|---|---|
| Central atom | A Group 14 atom: C, Si, Ge, Sn, or Pb | Hydrogen |
| Directional feature | A Lewis base may approach a positive σ-hole, often along the extension of a covalent bond to the tetrel atom | Directionality depends on the hydrogen-bond donor and acceptor arrangement |
| Electronic description | Electrostatics, polarization, possible charge transfer, and deformation may contribute in system-dependent proportions | Its description likewise depends on the molecular system; this comparison does not imply identical energetic origins |
| Strength comparison | No universal ranking follows from the interaction label alone | No universal ranking against tetrel bonds follows from the interaction label alone |
A meaningful comparison should specify the molecules and geometry and consider the available structural and electronic evidence, rather than assume that either interaction is always stronger.

Can carbon form a tetrel bond?
Yes, in suitable chemical contexts. Carbon is less polarizable than the heavier tetrels and is generally a less facile participant, but that does not rule out carbon-centered tetrel bonding. The local bonding and molecular environment matter, so carbon should not be treated as interchangeable with silicon, germanium, tin, or lead. Reviews discuss carbon examples alongside the broader range of Group 14 interactions (Varadwaj et al., 2018: review; Bauzá et al., 2023: crystallographic progress review).
How do scientists identify a tetrel bond?
A short contact in a crystal structure can suggest an interaction, but distance alone does not establish either a tetrel bond or its mechanism. Experimental solid-state structures, including tin and lead coordination compounds, are part of the evidence base; computational studies can examine electrostatic potential, orbitals, electron density, and deformation. A persuasive interpretation uses multiple indicators and relates them to the geometry and chemical context.

- Structure: Does the Lewis base approach the Group 14 center in a geometry consistent with the proposed interaction, such as alignment with a σ-hole?
- Electrostatic potential: Is there a positive region on the tetrel atom in the relevant direction?
- Electronic analysis: Do orbital or electron-density analyses support donor–acceptor interaction or polarization where proposed?
- Context: Are the tetrel atom’s bonding environment and the base’s electron-rich character consistent with the interpretation?
- Evidence type: Is the claim based on crystallography, calculation, or both, and does the stated conclusion match what that evidence can establish?
Not every attraction involving a Group 14 atom is a tetrel bond. The Lewis-acid/electron-donor relationship and supporting evidence matter. The σ-hole description also should not be conflated with π-hole tetrel interactions, which arise from different covalent bonding patterns; a 2016 review discusses σ-hole and related noncovalent interactions (review).
