Tesla ride hailing is an app-based service for requesting transportation in Tesla vehicles. The term can refer to different kinds of rides: Tesla’s Robotaxi service offers driverless rides in some areas, while some Tesla rideshare trips use Full Self-Driving (Supervised) with an attentive safety driver. A Tesla ride is not automatically driverless; the ride type depends on the service and location.
How Tesla ride hailing works
Riders request a trip through Tesla’s Robotaxi app. Tesla’s terms cover both Model Y Robotaxis and Cybercabs. Vehicle assignment depends on availability and group size, so riders should not assume they can choose a particular model. Tesla shows fares and fees in U.S. dollars in the app; charges may include tolls, airport fees, regulatory charges, and taxes. Tesla’s Robotaxi terms also say that a ride may not reach its intended destination and that Tesla may modify or cancel rides, including because of weather. Robotaxi is not intended for emergency transportation.
Robotaxi and supervised rideshare are not the same
Robotaxi
Tesla uses Robotaxi for its driverless service. However, Tesla’s Q3 2026 investor update described operating status differently across markets: Miami, Orlando, and Tampa launched unsupervised rides in July 2026, the unsupervised Austin operating area expanded, and Austin, Dallas, and Houston were labeled “Ramping Unsupervised.” Tesla listed the San Francisco Bay Area as a safety-driver operation. These are Tesla’s reported statuses at the time of that update, not a guarantee that every trip in a listed market is driverless. Tesla’s investor relations updates
Supervised rideshare
A ride in a Tesla running Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is different: Tesla says the system is SAE Level 2 and requires active driver supervision. Its terms explicitly say that this does not mean the rideshare vehicle is autonomous. Ask or check in the app whether the specific ride has a safety driver rather than inferring its status from the phrase “Tesla ride hailing.” Tesla’s Robotaxi terms

Where Tesla advertises Robotaxi rides
As of October 4, 2026, Tesla’s Robotaxi landing page advertised rides in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. Its Cybercab FAQ gives a slightly different list for the broader Robotaxi service—Tampa, Miami, Austin, Dallas, and Houston—and separately says Cybercab rides are available in limited areas of Austin. Because Tesla’s pages do not show the same city list, treat these as advertised service areas, not a guarantee of coverage for every address or trip. Use the Robotaxi page and app to check live local availability, boundaries, hours, and ride details before planning a trip.
What to know about Cybercab rides
Tesla describes Cybercab as a golden, two-seat vehicle with butterfly doors and a touchscreen. Rides are requested and started through the Robotaxi app. Tesla’s FAQ says Cybercab carries up to two people and does not permit children younger than 13. Since Tesla assigns a vehicle based on availability and group size, requesting a Robotaxi ride does not mean you can select a Cybercab. Tesla Cybercab FAQ

Regulatory status depends on jurisdiction
California’s permit records are specific to that state. The California DMV lists Tesla Robotaxi LLC among companies authorized for testing with a driver, as of September 17, 2026. Its displayed driverless-testing list, updated April 3, 2026, and deployment list, dated November 21, 2025, do not list Tesla. These records do not establish Tesla’s regulatory status in other states. California DMV autonomous-vehicle permit holders
Separately, on September 4, 2026, NHTSA announced an audit query into Tesla’s certification that Cybercab meets applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, following the commercial deployment of driverless Cybercab vehicles in Austin. The announcement describes an open compliance inquiry, not a conclusion about whether Cybercab complies. NHTSA’s announcement

What to check before requesting a ride
- Location: Confirm that the pickup and destination fall within the live service area shown in the app.
- Supervision: Check whether your particular ride is driverless or has a safety driver; Level 2 Full Self-Driving (Supervised) rides require active driver supervision.
- Vehicle and group size: Tesla assigns the vehicle based on availability and group size. Cybercab has two seats and does not permit children younger than 13.
- Fare and trip conditions: Review the app’s fare and fees. Tesla says weather and other conditions may lead it to modify or cancel a ride, and the ride may not reach its intended destination.
