Terafab is a planned semiconductor manufacturing initiative associated with SpaceX and Tesla, with Intel reported by SpaceX to have joined in April 2026. Its proposed facility would bring logic-chip fabrication, memory production and advanced packaging together, while the project’s stated ambition is to produce one terawatt of compute per year. That is a long-term target, not current or independently verified output. The widely reported $20 billion cost is an estimate, not a confirmed project budget.
What Terafab is designed to do
Terafab is presented as a single, integrated manufacturing operation rather than a conventional chip factory focused on one stage. The project website describes a facility combining logic chips, memory and advanced packaging. SpaceX’s SEC filing adds lithography-mask design to that scope and says the closed-loop approach is intended to speed testing and iteration. SpaceX’s filing and the Terafab project website describe the planned scope.
Logic, memory and packaging
Logic chips perform computation; memory stores data used by computing systems; and advanced packaging connects and organizes chips into usable components. Combining these activities is the project’s stated manufacturing concept. It does not establish that the proposed facility is operating or that it has demonstrated production capability in each area.
Why integrate the stages?
SpaceX says bringing design-related work, fabrication and packaging together is meant to allow faster testing and iteration. That is the project’s rationale, not a publicly demonstrated performance result.

What the one-terawatt target means
The Terafab website displays “1 TW/Year” as its output target. SpaceX’s SEC filing describes one terawatt of annual compute production capacity as a long-term goal. Neither source reports that Terafab has achieved that output. The figure should be read as an ambition for future capacity, not a measurement of chips being produced today.
At the March 2026 announcement, Elon Musk also projected 100–200 gigawatts of terrestrial compute and roughly one terawatt in space, according to Tom’s Hardware’s coverage. Those were projections voiced at the event, not verified capacity plans.

How much Terafab may cost
The approximately $20 billion figure comes from launch-era reporting by Tom’s Hardware. It is not a confirmed, approved or committed project budget. In a May 7, 2026 SEC response, SpaceX said anticipated Terafab capital expenditures were not yet available. The same response said definitive agreements, schedules and milestones had not been established. SpaceX’s SEC correspondence is the more direct disclosure on what had not yet been finalized.
Who is involved—and what remains uncertain
SpaceX and Tesla are associated with the initiative. SpaceX said in a June 2026 filing that Intel joined Terafab in early April, bringing chip design, fabrication and packaging capabilities. SpaceX’s June filing describes Intel’s participation.

- Silicon wafers are fragile—please handle with care.
- Circuit details can be examined under a microscope.
That participation does not mean every project detail or long-term commitment is settled. In its May response, SpaceX said Tesla and Intel were not obligated to remain in the project and that definitive Terafab agreements could not yet be entered. SpaceX described a general framework agreement with Tesla, with individual projects subject to separate negotiations and approvals.
Nor is Terafab described as a replacement for outside suppliers. SpaceX expects to continue sourcing a significant portion of its compute hardware from third-party suppliers and characterizes the project as complementary to those relationships.

Has TSMC joined Terafab?
No agreement is established in the available reporting. On October 3, 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that Musk confirmed discussions with TSMC, but said the terms and structure were undecided; TSMC had not publicly commented. Discussions do not establish that TSMC has joined Terafab or agreed to build a facility. Tom’s Hardware reported the discussions.

Where and when will Terafab open?
The reviewed company disclosures do not establish a production opening date, development timeline or dated milestones. SpaceX’s May 2026 SEC response said schedules and milestones were not yet available, so a specific start-of-production date cannot be stated from these sources.

What to watch for next
The useful test of Terafab’s progress is whether public claims turn into concrete, verifiable commitments and results. The May SEC response establishes that several of those details were still unsettled at that point. Future updates would need to clarify:
Quick Recap
- Whether the participants enter definitive agreements.
- Whether the reported cost becomes a stated and committed capital plan.
- Whether dated development milestones and a production schedule are published.
- Whether the proposed manufacturing scope is demonstrated in operation.
- Whether the one-terawatt annual target is supported by verifiable output or capacity figures.
