Technology errors and omissions (tech E&O) insurance is professional liability coverage for technology businesses facing third-party claims that an error, omission, negligent service, or product failure caused financial loss. Depending on the policy, it may cover defense costs and damages, subject to the contract’s limits, exclusions, and other terms. A claim allegation is not proof of a mistake, and an example of a possible claim is not a promise that a policy will cover it.
What technology E&O insurance means
Tech E&O is designed around alleged financial harm to a customer or another third party arising from the insured’s technology services or products. AIG Canada describes it as coverage against a claim that the insured was negligent in providing a technology service, and says its coverage may address third-party financial loss from inadequate technology services, including defense costs and damages within the liability limit. AIG Canada’s Tech E&O overview
The key terms are the policy’s definition of covered technology or professional services, the kind of claim made, and the loss alleged. Whether any particular claim is covered depends on the policy wording, endorsements, exclusions, applicable jurisdiction, and facts. AIG’s U.S. professional liability coverage information

These examples illustrate the kinds of allegations associated with the coverage; they do not establish that a specific policy would pay:

The reviewed sources do not establish a universal legal requirement to buy tech E&O. Requirements can depend on jurisdiction, licensing rules, and client contracts; a customer may ask a technology provider to show proof of professional liability insurance. How tech E&O differs from cyber and general liability
The labels are useful starting points, not substitutes for comparing the actual coverage grants. Products can overlap or combine different coverage modules.
| Coverage | Main exposure described by the sources | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Technology E&O | Third-party financial loss allegedly caused by an error, omission, negligence, or failure in a technology product or service. | Whether the policy’s definition of technology or professional services includes the business’s work, and how it treats claims, defense costs, and limits. AIG Canada |
| Cyber insurance | Cyber incidents, data, network security, breach response, recovery, and related exposures; policies may include first-party and third-party coverage. | Which cyber events and costs are covered, and whether the policy includes first-party or third-party grants. Some products combine cyber and E&O modules. Progressive Commercial; Chubb |
| General liability | Commonly claims involving bodily injury or property damage. | Whether the business also needs general liability; it is distinct from professional liability. Texas Department of Insurance |
As a shorthand, Progressive distinguishes tech E&O for financial loss from a failed product or service from cyber insurance for data loss and attacks. It is not a complete policy comparison. Chubb’s DigiTech ERM is one example of an insurer combining technology E&O, media, and cyber exposures; that does not mean all policies use the same package or wording. Policy details to check before relying on coverage
- Covered services and products: Check whether the policy names the work the business actually does, such as SaaS, software development, systems integration, hosting, consulting, data processing, implementation, or support. The policy’s definition—not the business’s marketing description—sets the relevant scope. AIG Canada
- Defense costs and limits: Confirm whether defense expenses reduce the liability limit or are paid in addition to it, along with per-claim and aggregate limits, deductibles or retentions, and any applicable sublimits. AIG describes defense costs and damages within the liability limit for its cited offering. AIG Canada
- Claims-made timing: Many professional liability policies are claims-made. Texas Department of Insurance explains that this generally means the incident and claim report must fit within specified policy periods, unless special coverage is arranged. Review the contract for reporting deadlines, the retroactive date, continuity between policies, and any extended reporting provision. Texas Department of Insurance
- Exclusions and endorsements: There is no universal exclusions list established here. Read the actual policy and endorsements, because the insurer’s stated scope is subject to its terms, conditions, exclusions, and the facts of the claim. AIG U.S.; Chubb
- Cyber overlap: Determine whether cyber-related provisions cover network security, privacy, incident response, business interruption, data recovery, cyber extortion, or media exposures—and whether each is a first-party or third-party coverage grant. Chubb’s cyber coverage information
- Contracts and geography: Compare policy limits and proof-of-insurance terms with client contract requirements, and confirm that the policy applies where the business operates and provides services. Rules and availability can vary by jurisdiction. Texas Department of Insurance
Claims-made versus occurrence coverage
The trigger matters because it determines which policy period may respond. A claims-made policy generally depends on when the claim is made and reported, as well as the policy’s requirements concerning the underlying incident. Occurrence coverage generally turns on when the incident happened. The contract defines the applicable trigger and reporting requirements; do not assume that renewing or replacing a policy automatically preserves coverage for earlier work.
