Storage resource management (SRM) is the management of physical and logical storage resources. It gives administrators visibility into storage capacity, configuration, availability, performance, and utilization so they can operate storage and plan its use. The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) defines it as the “management of physical and logical storage resources, including storage elements, storage devices, appliances, virtual devices, disk volume and file resources.”
What resources does SRM cover?
SRM covers both the equipment that stores data and the logical resources built on that equipment. Physical resources include storage devices and appliances. Logical resources include virtual devices, disk volumes, and file resources. A tool may show information across multiple layers, but coverage varies by product and environment; the acronym does not guarantee support for every vendor or resource type.
For the formal scope, see SNIA’s glossary definition. SNIA’s Storage Management Initiative Specification 1.1.1 Revision 1 provides related technical-position material.

SRM describes an administrative discipline, not one mandatory feature set. In practice, it can help an organization:

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
- Track used and available capacity and examine trends for future planning.
- Monitor performance and availability to help identify potential problems.
- See storage configuration and utilization across physical and logical resources.
- Generate reports and alerts for operational work.
- Support decisions about allocation, migration, quotas, or storage tiers when the tools and infrastructure provide those capabilities.
These functions help answer practical questions such as which resources are running short of space, where capacity is being used, and whether storage needs to be reallocated. The exact measurements and actions available depend on the systems being monitored and the SRM product.
How is SRM different from backup?
SRM is not simply another name for backup. SRM focuses on visibility and management of storage resources, including monitoring and planning. Backup tools focus on creating and managing copies of data for recovery. The functions can coexist in one IT environment, and product categories may overlap, but the terms describe different primary purposes. A Computerworld overview published October 30, 2000 discusses this distinction and is useful as historical context, not as a current product-market guide.

What does SRM mean in Grid computing?
In scientific computing, “Storage Resource Manager” can also refer to a specific set of Grid web-services protocols. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Storage Resource Manager Interface Specification, version 2.2 uses the acronym in that protocol-specific sense and distinguishes it from the broader industry discipline. In an enterprise-storage discussion, SRM normally means storage resource management; in a Grid-protocol discussion, check the context.

- Alerts and reports: Determine whether notifications and reports can be tailored to daily operations and planning.
- Operational fit: Check compatibility with existing infrastructure, processes, and policy requirements.
Vendor descriptions can help identify stated features, but they are not independent benchmarks. For example, SolarWinds describes its Storage Resource Monitor as providing multi-vendor storage monitoring, capacity information, performance troubleshooting, dashboards, reports, and alerts. Treat those as the vendor’s claims and confirm current availability and supported systems directly. Similarly, SUSE’s storage overview discusses forecasting and tiering and identifies SUSE Enterprise Storage as based on Ceph; that broader platform context is adjacent to, rather than synonymous with, SRM monitoring and reporting.
