Stop-and-go adaptive cruise control (ACC) is a driver-assistance feature that adjusts a vehicle’s speed to help maintain a selected following gap and can brake to a complete stop behind traffic. Whether it moves again automatically depends on the vehicle and how long it has been stopped. The driver must continue watching the road and be ready to brake or take control.
How does stop-and-go ACC work?
ACC helps maintain a selected cruising speed and following distance from a vehicle ahead in the same lane. When traffic slows, the system can reduce speed; stop-and-go ACC extends that behavior to a full stop behind traffic.
The sensing and control setup varies by vehicle. Renault describes using radar or camera information to maintain speed and following distance, with acceleration and deceleration controlled through the engine and braking system. Honda describes a camera and millimeter-wave radar measuring the distance to, and speed difference from, the vehicle ahead. These are manufacturer examples, not a universal sensor specification. Renault’s Clio 5 manual and Honda’s ACC with Low Speed Follow overview describe their respective systems.
Does it resume automatically after traffic stops?
Not always. The restart rule can differ by make and model, and may depend on how long the vehicle has been stopped.

- Renault Clio 5: The documented system resumes without driver action when the stop lasts approximately 30 seconds or less. After a longer stop, the driver must press the accelerator or RES/+.
- Honda ACC with Low Speed Follow: Honda’s overview says the system stops behind a vehicle and resumes when the driver operates a steering-wheel switch or accelerator.
- Dacia Duster: Its manual describes a full stop and requires driver input after approximately 30 seconds. It also says automatic restart may be inhibited if the system detects a pedestrian nearby.
These rules apply to the documented systems; they are not standard behavior for every vehicle with stop-and-go ACC. See the Renault manual, Honda overview, and Dacia owner documentation for the cited examples.
What should you check in your vehicle’s manual?
“Stop-and-go” does not tell you every operating detail. Check the owner manual for the specific model year, trim, transmission, and market. For comparisons, verify:

- Whether it restarts automatically, requires RES or accelerator input, or changes behavior after a time threshold.
- The stated minimum and maximum operating speeds and selectable following-gap settings.
- Road, weather, and other operating limitations, including warnings about stationary objects.
Capabilities can vary by vehicle configuration. Renault, for example, lists different activation ranges for automatic- and manual-gearbox versions of the Clio 5. Honda notes that switch and display locations can differ between vehicles. A general technology page may not establish that a feature is available on a particular model, year, trim, and market.
What are the safety limits?
Stop-and-go ACC is a driver aid, not autonomous driving or a guarantee that the vehicle will stop for every hazard. Renault’s owner manual states: “The driver must always be in control of the vehicle.”

Dacia warns that the braking capability of its documented system is limited and that it does not trigger an emergency stop. Its manual also says the system does not recognize traffic lights and signs and may not detect pedestrians or fixed obstacles. Those warnings describe that Dacia system; consult your own vehicle’s manual for its stated limits. Keep watching traffic, remain ready to brake, and take over whenever needed.
