SSD wear leveling is the drive controller’s method of spreading write and erase activity across NAND flash blocks. Because flash can withstand only a finite amount of writing and erasing, distributing that work helps prevent a small part of the drive from wearing out much sooner than the rest. It can extend the useful life of the flash, but it cannot prevent wear or guarantee how long an SSD will last.

What is SSD wear leveling?

Wear leveling is a controller-level process that manages how often different areas of an SSD’s NAND flash are written and erased. Rather than repeatedly using the same physical blocks whenever data changes, the controller distributes activity across available blocks to reduce uneven wear. Samsung describes the technique as distributing data writes across available cells, while Kioxia explains how block erase counts can guide where new data is written.

How does wear leveling work?

Your computer addresses data on an SSD through logical addresses. The SSD controller maps those addresses to physical locations in NAND flash and can change where data is stored. In a wear-leveling approach, the controller tracks how heavily blocks have been used and can direct writes toward less-used blocks or remap data to balance use.

The practical aim is to avoid repeatedly stressing a small set of blocks while others remain lightly used. The specific algorithm, tracking method, and thresholds vary by drive and controller; there is no single implementation that applies to every SSD. Kioxia’s explanation of erase-count management illustrates the principle, and Microchip describes wear leveling and remapping in managed NAND.

Does wear leveling extend an SSD’s life?

It can help extend the useful life of NAND by reducing premature wear in heavily used areas. It does not make flash immune to wear, establish a fixed lifespan, or guarantee that every block will wear evenly. Actual endurance depends on the NAND, drive design, controller behavior, and workload. SanDisk’s SSD endurance guidance discusses these product-dependent limits.

A drive’s TBW rating—terabytes written—is a model-specific endurance rating, not a promise that the SSD will fail exactly when that amount has been written or that all drives last the same length of time. Kingston defines TBW as an SSD endurance measure. Historical cell-cycle figures, such as examples in Seagate’s older SSD FAQ, should not be treated as current universal values for NAND or as a way to predict an individual drive’s lifespan.

Is wear leveling the same as TRIM?

No. They are related to flash management, but they do different things:

Feature What it does What initiates it
Wear leveling Distributes writes and erase activity across physical flash blocks to reduce uneven wear. The SSD controller manages it.
TRIM Identifies data blocks the operating system no longer needs, allowing the SSD to prepare them for future writes. The operating system or host sends the indication; the drive handles it.

SanDisk explains TRIM as an OS-to-drive indication that data is no longer in use. TRIM is not itself wear leveling.

How can you check SSD wear?

Wear leveling happens inside the drive; checking its status is a separate activity. S.M.A.R.T. data can expose health and wear information for SATA or NVMe SSDs, although the details available depend on the drive and the monitoring software. SanDisk recommends its Dashboard for checking wear and endurance information on supported products. Monitoring can help you review a drive’s reported condition, but it does not perform wear leveling.
