Spyware is malware that secretly monitors activity on a device or collects personal information. Pop-ups, redirects, unfamiliar apps or extensions, and slow performance can be warning signs, but none proves spyware on its own. The safest response is to use the guidance for your device, avoid downloads or phone numbers promoted by alarming pop-ups, and treat a possible partner-tracking situation as a personal-safety issue—not just a device-cleanup task.

What spyware does—and what it does not mean

Spyware is software designed to monitor activity or obtain information without the user’s informed permission. Depending on the software and access it has, it may collect browsing or device activity, account details, messages, or location. Stalkerware is a form of monitoring software that can be used by an abusive partner or ex to track someone’s location, read communications, or monitor activity. The term describes how software is used; a symptom alone cannot identify who installed it or why.

Spyware is a type of malware, but the terms are not interchangeable: malware also includes software with other harmful purposes. The Federal Trade Commission’s malware guidance explains how to protect against, detect, and remove malware.

How to tell whether a device may be compromised

Possible clues include persistent pop-ups, browser redirects or settings changes you did not make, unfamiliar apps or browser extensions, unexpectedly poor performance, security tools that stop working, or messages sent from your account without your action. These problems can also have ordinary causes, such as a faulty app, unwanted browser settings, or an account that was accessed separately from the device. Treat them as reasons to check—not as proof of spyware.

Give more weight to a clear warning from the device’s operating system or app store than to a web page that suddenly claims your device is infected. Do not call a number displayed in a security pop-up or install software from an ad. The FTC warns that fake support alerts can be used to scam people; use a trusted security provider’s official website or your device maker’s support instead.

Remove spyware safely, based on your device

Start with official platform guidance and work from the least disruptive steps toward a reset. Before removing anything, consider whether you need to keep evidence or whether another person may notice a change. If you suspect abuse-related monitoring, follow the safety guidance below before changing the phone.

Android phones and tablets

  1. Open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Play Protect. Check that Play Protect is enabled and run a scan. Google says Play Protect checks apps and devices, warns about harmful apps, and may deactivate or remove them. See Google Play Protect guidance.
  2. Install available Android and security updates using the update options in your device’s Settings app. Menu names can vary by manufacturer and Android version.
  3. Uninstall apps you do not trust or do not recognize. If you are unsure what an app does, check its publisher and permissions before removing it; avoid deleting system components at random.
  4. Review your Google Account security, including recent security activity, signed-in devices, and recovery details. Change a password from a device you trust if you find unauthorized access, and secure any other account that reused that password.
  5. If the signs continue, Google says a factory reset or help from the device manufacturer may be needed. A reset erases device data, so back up files you need and understand what will be restored before proceeding. Google’s Android malware-removal steps provide the platform guidance.

Windows PCs and other computers

  1. Do not interact with suspicious pop-ups. Close the browser tab or window; if it will not close normally, quit the browser rather than calling a number or downloading the offered “cleanup” tool.
  2. Remove browser extensions you do not recognize or trust. In Chrome, open the three-dot menu, choose Extensions > Manage Extensions, then remove an extension you have verified is unwanted. If browser changes persist, reset Chrome settings.
  3. Install operating-system and browser updates. On Windows, use Microsoft’s built-in security tools or a reputable security product obtained directly from its trusted official source, then run a scan. The FTC recommends keeping security software updated and scanning when malware is suspected; no security product can guarantee detection or removal of every threat.
  4. Review your browser and account security, including unfamiliar sign-ins, recovery methods, and messages you did not send. Change affected passwords from a trusted device.
  5. If symptoms persist, consult the computer maker or a trusted support provider. A reset may be an option, but first preserve needed files and use official recovery instructions. Google’s computer malware-removal guidance covers browser cleanup, updates, and next steps; Windows users should also follow Microsoft’s malware-removal and antivirus instructions.

Macs and Chromebooks

For either computer, remove browser extensions you do not trust, install available operating-system and browser updates, and review account security. On a Chromebook, Chrome extensions are managed in Chrome under Extensions > Manage Extensions; on a Mac, check extensions in the browser where the unwanted behavior appears. Use security tools or recovery instructions from Apple, Google, or another trusted official source rather than from an alert or advertisement. If the problem remains, contact the device maker or a trusted support provider. Google’s computer guidance gives additional browser and account steps.

iPhone and iPad

If iOS or iPadOS displays Apple’s specific alert that a third-party app contains malware and cannot be opened, delete that app as Apple recommends. This instruction applies to that alert; it does not mean every unexpected pop-up or battery issue indicates spyware. Follow Apple’s instructions for the malware alert.

Keep iOS updated. In its April 14, 2026 guidance, Apple described web attacks affecting older iOS versions and advised updating to a protected current version; if an update is unavailable, Apple says Lockdown Mode may be considered if available. Those steps address the attacks Apple describes, not every possible cause of unusual iPhone behavior. See Apple’s iOS web-attack update guidance.

What to do if a partner or ex may be tracking you

Do not begin by confronting the suspected person, deleting monitoring software, or resetting the phone if doing so could increase danger or alert them. A change to the device may be visible to the person monitoring it, and a reset may destroy evidence. The FTC advises using a different, trusted device to contact an advocate or law enforcement and to preserve evidence before replacing or resetting a phone.
