In Google’s concise formulation, it is “what you get when you treat operations as if it’s a software problem.” In practice, SRE uses engineering, automation, and explicit reliability goals to help teams make services work well for users while balancing reliability risk against the pace of change.
What site reliability engineering means
SRE is an approach to designing, operating, and maintaining production services. Rather than treating operations as a series of manual tasks, it uses software engineering to build systems and processes that make services more reliable and easier to run. Google’s SRE book describes SREs as engineers who apply computer science and engineering to computing systems, including large distributed systems. They may write service software, create reusable operational components, or adapt existing solutions to new problems.
The definition is associated with Google’s model, not a universal job specification. Organizations differ in which services SREs support, how teams are organized, and which responsibilities they take on. The shared idea is to use engineering to improve the operation of a service, not simply to assign its upkeep to manual administration.
What reliability means to users
Reliability is more than whether servers are switched on. It concerns whether people can use a service successfully, with acceptable availability, latency, performance, and capacity. Those qualities can look different across services: a slow response may be tolerable in one context and a serious failure in another. Teams therefore need measures that reflect the experience their own service is meant to provide. Google’s SRE site identifies availability, latency, performance, and capacity among the discipline’s concerns.

What an SRE does
An SRE helps make production services dependable through engineering work. Depending on the organization and service, that can include writing software, improving operational systems, building reusable components, monitoring service behavior, automating repeatable work, and helping teams respond to incidents. The boundary between product engineering and SRE is not fixed: Google’s SRE book introduction describes an approach in which software engineers design the operations function and improve it with engineering.
The point is not that every organization needs a separate, dedicated SRE team. The scope and ownership model should fit the services and people involved. A company might place reliability engineers alongside product teams, create a central team, or share responsibilities; these are organizational choices rather than requirements built into the definition.

How SRE uses SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs
Service-level terminology helps teams turn the broad goal of “reliable enough” into something they can measure and act on. The terms are related, but they are not interchangeable:
- Service-level indicator (SLI): a measurement of service behavior, such as a measure of successful requests or response time.
- Service-level objective (SLO): a target for an SLI over a defined period. It states the reliability level the team aims to provide.
- Service-level agreement (SLA): an agreement concerning service levels, often expressing commitments to customers or users.
The right indicator and target depend on the service and what its users need. A metric that is easy to collect is not automatically a useful measure of user-visible reliability. Google Cloud’s SRE fundamentals guide explains the distinction between SLIs, SLOs, and SLAs.

How error budgets balance reliability and change
An error budget is the amount of unreliability a team can tolerate while meeting its chosen SLO. It gives a team a way to discuss the risk of changes against actual service performance, rather than treating reliability and product development as unrelated priorities.
In Google’s model, when a service is performing within its objective, the team has room to continue making changes; when reliability risk becomes unacceptable, it can prioritize restoring the service. An error budget is not permission to cause arbitrary outages or a promise that a service will never fail. It is a decision framework tied to an agreed objective, and each organization must adapt it to its service and risk tolerance. Google explains this approach in its SRE book chapter on embracing risk.

What toil means in SRE
Toil is repetitive operational work that takes time without producing lasting improvement to the service or the way it is run. Google’s examples include rollouts, upgrades, restarts, and alert triage. Automation and other engineering improvements can reduce toil, freeing more time for work that improves the system rather than repeatedly handling the same operational burden.
Google’s 2018 SRE Workbook chapter on eliminating toil says Google limits its SREs’ time on operational work to 50%. The chapter includes both toil and non-toil operational work and cautions that this target may not suit every organization. It is Google’s stated limit, not an industry-wide benchmark or a universal staffing rule.

How SRE relates to DevOps
SRE and DevOps share themes such as collaboration, automation, and responsibility for operating software. SRE is a named discipline with a body of practices, including service-level goals, error budgets, and reducing toil. DevOps is used differently across organizations, so there is no single settled boundary that makes SRE and DevOps universally separate or interchangeable. Google’s SRE Principles publication addresses the relationship while describing principles such as monitoring, automation, error budgets, and blameless postmortems.
How to recognize an SRE approach
A team’s title alone does not establish that it follows SRE. Look at how it makes reliability operational:
- It measures service behavior using indicators that matter to users.
- It sets explicit reliability objectives rather than relying only on vague aspirations.
- It uses reliability data to inform decisions about change and operational priorities.
- It invests in engineering and automation to reduce repetitive manual work.
- It treats incidents as opportunities to understand and improve systems, rather than assigning blame.
These practices do not prescribe one team structure or one target for every service. They provide a way to connect software engineering with the ongoing work of delivering a dependable service.
