Selenium is used to automate web browsers, most often to test web applications through browser actions such as opening pages, entering form data, and checking visible results. Its tools have distinct roles: WebDriver runs coded tests, Selenium IDE records and replays browser actions, and Selenium Grid runs WebDriver tests on remote machines and across browser configurations.

What Selenium does—and what it does not do

Selenium is a project of browser-automation tools and libraries, not a single, all-in-one testing framework. Its central coded automation interface, WebDriver, lets test code control a browser through the automation implementation provided for that browser. The Selenium project explains that “WebDriver uses browser automation APIs provided by browser vendors to control the browser and run tests.” Selenium therefore lets a test exercise a web application in a real browser rather than compiling its API into the application under test.

Teams use Selenium to automate functional checks of user-facing flows—for example, navigating to a page, filling out and submitting a form, and verifying the result shown in the browser. They can run important flows against a local application or a deployment candidate, and check behavior across supported browsers. Selenium supplies browser automation; your surrounding test setup still determines how tests are organized and run, what assertions they make, and how they fit into continuous integration.

Which Selenium component should you use?

Component How tests are authored Where it fits
WebDriver Write browser actions and checks in code. The main choice for coded desktop web automation and functional tests. See the Selenium overview.
Selenium IDE Record and replay browser actions in an extension. Useful for learning commands or prototyping simple recorded cases. The official IDE page lists Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. See Selenium IDE documentation.
Selenium Grid Run WebDriver tests through remote browser instances. Useful when tests need to run across machines, browsers, or platforms, or when distributed execution is needed. See the Grid guide.
Selenium Manager Manages driver setup for Selenium bindings when a driver has not been supplied; it can also manage selected browser releases. Helps with browser and driver setup; it is not a test-authoring tool. See Selenium Manager documentation.

These components serve different jobs and can be combined. For example, you can author a test with WebDriver and send it to Grid; IDE is not a replacement for Grid, and Grid is not a test editor.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to use Selenium WebDriver

Choose WebDriver when you need a repeatable, coded browser test that performs realistic interactions and checks what the browser displays. It is appropriate for flows whose outcomes depend on the web interface, such as navigation, form entry, submission, and visible confirmation.

WebDriver can control different browsers, but a cross-browser test is not automatically guaranteed to behave identically everywhere. Browser implementations expose browser-specific capabilities, so configuration or test adjustments may be necessary. Check the current documentation for the browsers and capabilities you intend to use; Selenium’s browser documentation covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari without implying that every version, feature, or legacy driver has equal current support. Check the browser-specific guidance.

When you need Selenium IDE or Grid

Use IDE to learn or prototype

Selenium IDE records browser actions and can replay them. It can be a convenient way to explore a simple interaction or learn the shape of Selenium commands. When a suite needs maintainable coded logic, broader test organization, or control over execution, WebDriver is the more direct fit.

Use Grid when local runs are not enough

Grid routes tests to remote browser instances, allowing execution across machines, browser types, or platforms. It becomes useful when sequential local runs do not provide the coverage or throughput your test matrix requires. A small suite running locally does not need Grid merely because it uses Selenium. Read about Selenium Grid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a basic local Grid quick start, Selenium lists Java 11 or higher, browsers, drivers (or Selenium Manager configuration), and the Selenium Server JAR as prerequisites. The quick start points WebDriver tests to http://localhost:4444. These are Grid server requirements, not prerequisites for every local WebDriver test. See the Grid quick start.

What you need to get started

For a basic local WebDriver setup, the Selenium getting-started guide calls for a language binding, a browser, and that browser’s driver. Selenium Manager, shipped with Selenium releases from version 4.6, can discover, download, and cache drivers when they are not already available. It can also automatically manage selected Chrome, Firefox, and Edge browser versions. Treat this as a supported setup aid, not a guarantee that every custom environment needs no configuration. Follow the official getting-started guide and check Selenium Manager’s scope.

The Selenium downloads page listed version 4.49.0 as stable on September 9, 2026. Release information changes, so check the official downloads page for the current version rather than relying on an older version reference.

Hosted browser execution for larger test matrices

If a team needs hosted browser or device coverage, remote execution, parallelism, CI integration, or access to locally hosted test applications, a cloud service may complement Selenium. BrowserStack documents a Selenium integration and capabilities for hosted automation; the documentation does not establish pricing or plan limits here. Compare providers against the browsers and operating systems you need, parallel throughput, CI integration, access to local or staging apps, and available debugging logs before choosing. See BrowserStack’s Selenium integration documentation.

Common misconceptions and troubleshooting

“Selenium is the whole testing framework”

Selenium automates browsers; it does not, by itself, provide your application’s test strategy, assertions, test runner, or CI system. Choose and configure the surrounding tools that supply those parts.

“I must download a driver manually every time”

Not necessarily. Selenium Manager can find, download, and cache drivers when none has been provided, and can manage selected browser versions. If setup still fails, check that your binding, browser, driver or manager configuration, and environment are compatible; custom environments may require additional configuration. Consult the Selenium Manager guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Grid is required for cross-browser tests”

Grid is for remote and distributed execution, not a requirement for every browser test. Start locally if that meets your coverage and execution needs; configure Grid when you need remote browser instances or distribution across machines and platforms. For server setup, verify the prerequisites and endpoint in the Grid quick start.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

“A test that passes in one browser proves the others work”

It does not. Browser implementations can expose different capabilities, and the supported status of versions and features can vary. Run the relevant flows against each target browser and review the current browser-specific documentation.

Learning resources and version context

An older supplementary resource, Selenium WebDriver: From Foundations To Framework, describes itself as compatible with Selenium 3.0. It may help with fundamentals, but it should not be treated as a current Selenium 4 manual. See the book’s own compatibility description and cross-check version-sensitive guidance against Selenium’s current documentation.
