Secure access service edge (SASE) is an enterprise architecture that brings wide-area networking and security services together, often delivering them from cloud locations near users and applications. It is designed to apply consistent access and security policies as people, devices, offices, and applications connect from different places. NIST describes SASE as an example of evolving WAN infrastructure that combines SD-WAN technologies with comprehensive security services.

What does SASE stand for?

SASE stands for secure access service edge. The term describes an architecture, not one specific appliance or a fixed set of products. Its central idea is to integrate network connectivity and security controls so they can be applied across distributed users, branch offices, cloud services, and data centers. NIST discusses SASE in its Guide to a Secure Enterprise Network Landscape, published in 2022 and updated on the publication page in 2025.

What capabilities does SASE combine?

A SASE design commonly combines network connectivity with cloud-delivered security. The exact bundle and terminology vary by provider; these capabilities do not necessarily mean an organization must buy a separate product for each function.

  • SD-WAN: directs traffic across available network connections and links branches with cloud services, data centers, and the internet.
  • Secure web gateway (SWG): inspects web traffic and applies controls to risky or policy-violating activity.
  • Cloud access security broker (CASB): provides visibility and policy controls for SaaS and other cloud applications.
  • Firewall-as-a-service (FWaaS): delivers firewall policy through a cloud service.
  • Zero trust network access (ZTNA): brokers access to specific applications based on identity, device, and contextual signals.
  • Unified policy and visibility: connects network and security controls through shared policy, logging, and reporting.

The architectural change is the integration of network and security functions that might otherwise be managed through separate products and consoles. Cisco’s SASE overview is one vendor explanation of the term and its common components; vendors can define their packages differently.

How is SASE different from SSE?

Security service edge (SSE) refers to the security-services layer, commonly including SWG, CASB, FWaaS, and ZTNA. SASE combines those security services with SD-WAN networking. This distinction follows Cisco’s vendor taxonomy, so check how a supplier defines its products and bundles.

An organization with an established WAN strategy might consider consolidating cloud security through SSE while retaining or managing networking separately. An organization updating branch networking and security together might evaluate a combined SASE architecture. Neither approach is automatically right: the choice depends on the existing network, security tools, and operational needs.

How does SASE relate to zero trust?

Zero trust is a broader security model; SASE is an architecture that can help apply zero-trust principles across network and cloud access. NIST explains that zero trust does not grant implicit trust based solely on a user’s or device’s network location or ownership. See NIST SP 800-207, Zero Trust Architecture, published in 2020.

ZTNA is the SASE capability that brokers application-specific access. It can use identity and device-health signals to determine whether a user or device should reach a particular application, rather than treating network access as permission to reach everything. The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s ZTNA reference architectures are illustrative, not prescriptive. They emphasize adapting designs to an organization’s environment and risk appetite, with attention to policy, segmentation, centralized logs, availability, and controlled emergency access.

Why do organizations consider SASE?

Users, applications, and data are spread across remote locations, branch offices, data centers, and cloud services. NIST identifies this distributed landscape and the growth of microservices as factors changing enterprise networking and security needs. SASE aims to reduce reliance on routing all traffic through a central data center while applying policy closer to users and applications.

Those are architectural goals, not guaranteed outcomes. Whether a deployment improves cost, latency, or security depends on factors such as provider coverage, configuration, traffic paths, existing infrastructure, and how the service is operated.

What should an organization compare before choosing a SASE approach?

Evaluate the design against actual traffic and security requirements, rather than comparing product labels alone.

  1. Map the existing estate. Account for SD-WAN, branch equipment, VPNs, firewalls, identity systems, and cloud security tools already in use.
  2. Check coverage and traffic paths. Consider relevant offices, users, devices, private applications, SaaS, cloud regions, and provider points of presence. Confirm how traffic reaches each application.
  3. Test policy and integration needs. Determine how identity, device posture, access rules, logs, and administration work across the network and security capabilities.
  4. Define security boundaries. Specify application-level access, segmentation, controls for cloud and web traffic, and which service enforces each policy.
  5. Plan for performance and resilience. Review routing for latency-sensitive workloads, service availability, failover behavior, and emergency access procedures.
  6. Assess operations and accountability. Compare deployment effort, troubleshooting, monitoring, audit logs, support responsibilities, and whether the bundle meets the organization’s requirements.

The NCSC’s ZTNA guidance is a useful design reference for considering logging, availability, and tightly governed break-glass access, but it should be adapted to the organization rather than treated as a universal blueprint.
