Sakura Wars is a SEGA game and multimedia franchise that blends character-focused adventure, theatrical performance, and combat in a steampunk version of Japan. Its defining idea is that a theater troupe also serves as a city’s defense force: its members entertain the public in peacetime and fight when danger arrives. The 2019 game, released in the West as Sakura Wars and in Japan as Shin Sakura Wars, gives newcomers a fresh story and action-based battles on PS4.

What is Sakura Wars?

Sakura Wars (known in Japanese as Sakura Taisen) is a SEGA franchise that began with a game for the Sega Saturn in Japan on September 27, 1996. It is set in a fictional, steampunk Taishō-era Japan. The original story follows Tokyo’s Imperial Combat Revue, whose members perform at the Imperial Theater while also defending the city. SEGA describes friendship and trust among the characters as part of the series’ story and game structure. SEGA’s 2019 franchise announcement and the official series history document the premise and chronology.

The franchise has grown through numbered games, spin-offs, and other media. SEGA says the series has also included television and theatrical animation, stage performances, comics, books, and CDs. Its December 2019 announcement reported more than four million cumulative domestic shipments for the series and related works in Japan; that figure is not a global sales total or sales figure for the 2019 game alone. SEGA’s announcement provides the statistic, while the official history records the franchise’s releases.

What is the 2019 Sakura Wars game about?

The 2019 entry takes place in an alternate, steampunk 1940s Tokyo. Seijuro Kamiyama becomes captain of the new Flower Division, a theater troupe and defense force whose reputation has suffered. He must help rebuild the troupe, protect Tokyo, and compete in the Combat Revue World Games. SEGA’s official game site describes the story and gameplay.

Conversations use the series’ LIPS system: the player’s responses and the way they are delivered affect relationships with other characters. Those interactions lead into action-focused battles featuring giant steam-powered mecha. This is a change from the tactical combat associated with earlier games; producer Tetsu Katano discussed the shift in SEGA of America’s PlayStation Blog coverage.

Is the new Sakura Wars connected to the old games?

The 2019 game is best understood as a new beginning rather than a direct continuation of the earlier cast’s story. SEGA of America described it as an all-new narrative designed for newcomers as well as longtime fans. That makes it a reasonable place to start without first playing the original games, but it does not make the 2019 story a replacement for the earlier entries or their history. SEGA of America’s launch coverage discusses the new narrative.

Where should you start with Sakura Wars?

Choose the 2019 game for a localized modern entry

Start with the 2019 Sakura Wars if you want a newcomer-friendly story with English-language Western release information and action battles. It launched on PS4 in Japan and Asia on December 12, 2019, and in the West on April 28, 2020. The US PlayStation Store lists it as a PS4 game and says it is playable on PS5, while noting that some PS4 features may be absent. Store availability and pricing can change, so check the local storefront. SEGA of America’s launch announcement gives the Western date; the US PlayStation Store listing gives platform and compatibility details.

Choose the 1996 game for the starting point in series history

The original Sakura Wars is the place to begin if you specifically want the franchise’s earliest story and structure. It launched in Japan for Sega Saturn in September 1996. Before seeking it out, verify the language, hardware, and legal availability of the specific release you find; the documented Japanese Saturn launch does not establish that a current English-language version is available to you. SEGA’s franchise announcement and the official series history record the original release.

How the older games differ from the 2019 entry

When deciding between an earlier title and the modern game, compare what matters to you rather than assuming every installment is equally accessible or plays the same way.

  • Practical availability: The 2019 game has a documented Western PS4 release and a current US PlayStation Store listing. Older titles require title-by-title checks for platform, language, and legal availability.
  • Story: The 2019 game introduces a new narrative and cast context for newcomers. Earlier entries are the route to the original cast and the series’ development over time.
  • Combat: The 2019 game uses action-focused mecha battles. Producer Tetsu Katano contrasts this with the tactical combat of earlier entries in SEGA of America’s launch coverage.
  • Localization: Do not assume an older game has an English release just because the series has a Western audience. Confirm the language for the exact title and version before buying or planning how to play it.

What else is part of the Sakura Wars franchise?

Sakura Wars is not limited to video games. SEGA’s franchise materials describe television and theatrical animation, stage performances, and comics; the official chronology also records books and CDs. These categories establish the breadth of the franchise, not current availability on a particular streaming service or at a particular retailer. Consult the official series history for documented releases.
