RTX Video Super Resolution (RTX VSR) is an NVIDIA feature that uses AI-assisted processing to upscale video and reduce visible compression artifacts during playback. It can make a low-resolution or heavily compressed video look sharper on a compatible GeForce RTX system, but it does not restore or verify detail that was missing from the original recording.
What RTX Video Super Resolution does
When video is smaller than the display resolution, ordinary scaling enlarges it to fit. RTX VSR adds a deep-learning step: NVIDIA says its model analyzes lower-resolution frames, predicts a higher-resolution image, and combines that result with conventional upscaling to sharpen the presentation and suppress compression artifacts. The output is an enhancement, not a recovery of guaranteed original pixels. NVIDIA’s launch explanation describes upscaling lower-resolution content toward the display resolution, including up to 4K in that launch context.
NVIDIA’s October 2023 VSR 1.5 update added enhancement at native resolution as well as improved detail preservation. That means the feature is not limited to enlarging a video that is below the screen’s pixel dimensions; it can also process compression artifacts at native resolution. NVIDIA’s VSR 1.5 announcement describes quality levels 1 through 4 for that version and notes that higher levels use more GPU resources; controls may differ in newer software.
What hardware and playback paths support it?
RTX VSR runs on GeForce RTX GPUs. NVIDIA’s launch coverage initially named RTX 30- and 40-series cards, then expanded support to RTX 20-series in October 2023; NVIDIA’s later feature overview describes support across GeForce RTX GPUs. Because exact behavior depends on the current driver and software, check NVIDIA’s current feature information for your GPU rather than relying on the launch-era limitation. NVIDIA has announced RTX VSR support in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and VLC, but that does not guarantee activation on every site, codec, player build, or playback configuration. Browser and software minimums in NVIDIA’s earlier announcements are dated milestones, not a complete current compatibility list. How to turn on RTX Video Super Resolution
NVIDIA documents controls in both NVIDIA Control Panel and the newer NVIDIA app. Menu names can vary with installed driver and app versions.

- NVIDIA Control Panel: Open NVIDIA Control Panel and go to Video > Adjust video image settings. Enable RTX video enhancement or Super Resolution, then choose the available quality setting. - Check notebook GPU routing if it does not activate: On Optimus notebooks, Chrome or Edge may need to be assigned to the high-performance GPU in Windows Graphics Settings. NVIDIA Control Panel help
If the enhancement is not apparent, confirm that the installed GPU, driver, browser or player, and specific playback path are compatible. The named browser and VLC support establishes supported paths, not universal support for every streaming pipeline.

Should you get an RTX GPU just for VSR?
RTX hardware is the enabling platform, but VSR alone is not enough to justify a graphics-card upgrade. First check whether your existing GeForce RTX GPU and playback setup support the feature. If you do not have compatible hardware, the evidence here does not establish a particular card as a worthwhile purchase solely for video enhancement; compare an upgrade against your broader performance needs.
