RTSP (Real-Time Streaming Protocol) establishes and controls a real-time media session; it usually does not carry the audio or video itself. For an IP camera, a compatible player can use RTSP to request a stream and control playback, while a separate negotiated mechanism—often RTP—delivers the media.
What is RTSP?
RTSP is an application-layer protocol used to establish and control delivery of real-time media. It is commonly used with IP cameras: the camera supplies a stream, and a player, recorder, or other client requests and controls it. The IETF’s RFC 2326 describes RTSP as a “network remote control” for multimedia servers (RFC 2326).
The distinction matters: RTSP is generally the control channel, not the continuous video path. A session can use RTSP commands to set up and start playback while another mechanism carries the media.
How does an RTSP session work?
A client and media server negotiate a session, after which the client can control playback. In RTSP 2.0, the IETF specification describes the control protocol and its session behavior; the actual media delivery is negotiated separately (RFC 7826).

- PLAY: The client asks the server to begin sending the media.
- PAUSE or teardown: Where supported, the client can pause delivery or end the session.
RTP is one common media delivery mechanism used with RTSP, but RTSP is designed to be relatively independent of the media type and delivery mechanism. Do not assume that every RTSP connection carries video over the same transport.
RTSP control transport vs. media transport
“Does RTSP use TCP or UDP?” has two answers because RTSP messages and the media stream are separate parts of the connection.

| Part of the session | What to know |
|---|---|
| RTSP control messages | RTSP 2.0 requires TCP or TLS over TCP for its messages. |
| Media delivery | Negotiated separately. Depending on the camera and client, options may include RTP over TCP, RTP over UDP unicast, multicast, or HTTP tunneling. |
For example, Axis documents several transport choices for its supported devices (Axis RTSP streaming documentation). The right choice depends on what both endpoints support and on the network’s firewall and routing configuration; no transport is universally best.
What is an RTSP URL?
An RTSP URL identifies a stream endpoint. Depending on the manufacturer and model, it may contain a username, password, camera IP address, port, and a path identifying a stream or channel. The path is vendor-specific: Axis documentation uses an axis-media path, while Reolink’s VLC guidance gives a Preview-channel example (Reolink VLC instructions).

Use the URL format documented for your exact camera model and firmware. Treat a real RTSP URL as a secret if it contains credentials: do not post it publicly, and avoid placing passwords in screenshots, chat messages, or logs you share.
How do I view an RTSP stream in VLC or ffplay?
First confirm that the camera supports RTSP and that it is enabled. The precise setting names, URL, and transport options vary by product, so follow the camera maker’s instructions rather than copying a URL from another model.

Using VLC with a supported Reolink camera
- Check Reolink’s instructions and compatibility information for your exact camera or NVR. Some configurations require enabling RTSP or ONVIF before a third-party player can connect.
- Find the model-specific RTSP URL and stream path in the manufacturer’s documentation. Do not reuse another device’s example path or credentials.
- In VLC, open the network-stream option, enter the RTSP URL, and connect. If VLC cannot connect, verify the camera’s RTSP setting, address, credentials, path, and network access.
Reolink documents VLC viewing for supported products, but its instructions are not a universal camera setup guide (Reolink VLC instructions).
Using ffplay with an Axis camera
- Make sure you have administrator access to the camera, RTSP is enabled, and ffplay is installed.
- Use the RTSP URL and stream path for your Axis model, following Axis’s getting-started documentation.
- Choose a supported transport if needed. Axis provides ffplay examples for different transport options; use the one that fits the camera and network rather than assuming one is always preferable.
See Axis’s RTSP guide and examples for its device-specific URL and transport details.

Can a browser play an RTSP stream directly?
RTSP does not guarantee direct playback in a web browser. RTSP URLs are generally used with compatible media players, recorders, or video-management systems. To display a camera feed in a browser or republish it through a browser-oriented streaming workflow, a relay or conversion layer may be needed. Reolink describes compatible viewing software and conversion as options; support depends on the particular camera and system (Reolink RTSP compatibility guidance).
Can you seek backward in a live RTSP stream?
Usually not when the camera is sending a live-only feed and no accessible recording is being retained. Seeking or time-shifting depends on a server or recorder storing media and exposing that capability; RTSP alone does not create a searchable video history. A recording system may provide playback controls, but those features depend on that system’s implementation.
What to check before choosing a camera or stream setup
- RTSP support: Verify support for the exact model and firmware. Not every IP camera supports RTSP.
- Standalone or recorder requirement: Some products or configurations may require an NVR or hub for third-party streaming.
- Stream selection: Confirm whether the camera offers the main stream, a substream, or the channel you need, and check which modes work with your camera/NVR combination.
- Client and transport compatibility: Ensure the player, recorder, or relay supports the camera’s available stream and negotiated transport.
- Purpose: Choose direct player viewing for a straightforward live view; use a recorder or video-management system if you also need recording and management.
Model support and configuration vary. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying or troubleshooting; Reolink’s guidance, for example, distinguishes supported products and configurations (Reolink RTSP compatibility guidance).
Troubleshooting RTSP connections
The player cannot connect
- Confirm RTSP is enabled in the camera settings and that your model supports it.
- Recheck the camera’s IP address, port, credentials, and model-specific stream path.
- Check whether the camera is reachable from the device running the player and whether firewall rules block the connection.
- If the camera requires an NVR or hub for third-party access, connect through the supported setup.
The stream connects but shows no video
- Verify that the URL points to a valid stream or channel for this model.
- Try another documented stream mode, such as the main or substream, if the camera exposes more than one.
- Check that the player supports the media format delivered by the camera.
The connection behaves differently on another network
- Compare the media transport options supported by both the camera and player.
- Check firewall and network handling for the selected transport. RTP over TCP, UDP unicast, multicast, and tunneling have different network requirements.
- Use the manufacturer’s transport-specific instructions to test an available alternative.
RTSP and YouTube live streaming are different workflows
RTSP is a way to control and access a real-time media stream, commonly from a camera. It is not, by itself, a service for keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock. If your goal is to broadcast uploaded, prerecorded videos continuously to YouTube rather than view an IP-camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that workflow.

Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is for looping uploaded videos to YouTube, not for going live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
