RTMP stands for Real-Time Messaging Protocol. It carries audio, video, and data messages from a broadcaster to a streaming service over a network connection; it is not a video codec, encoder, or streaming platform. Though closely associated with Adobe Flash, RTMP outlived Flash Player and remains an option for live-stream ingest on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube.
What RTMP is—and what it is not
Adobe’s specification describes RTMP as an application-level protocol that multiplexes and packetizes multimedia streams, including audio, video, and interactive content, over a transport such as TCP. It organizes and carries messages with timing information. The audio and video payloads are encoded separately, so RTMP itself does not determine a stream’s codec or picture quality. Adobe’s RTMP specification is dated December 21, 2012.
- Protocol: RTMP defines how messages are carried between communicating systems.
- Codec: A codec, such as H.264, defines how audio or video is encoded.
- Encoder: Software or hardware prepares captured or recorded media for transmission.
- Platform: A service such as YouTube or Twitch receives the stream and makes it available to viewers.
These parts work together, but they are not interchangeable. A platform’s current ingest documentation determines which protocol and codecs it accepts.
Why RTMP is associated with Flash
RTMP was developed for Adobe’s Flash media ecosystem. An Adobe-authored informational RFC explains that real-time communication in the Flash platform typically used RTMP messages, originally designed for RTMP Chunk Stream over TCP. The RFC also notes that Adobe developed the protocols and profiles; they did not originate in an IETF activity. It provides historical context, rather than a complete timeline of RTMP’s development. RFC 7425 was published in December 2014.

- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.
- Standalone Game Streaming: Just plug and play—ZowieBox enables PC-free live gaming without affecting gameplay. As an RTMP hardware encoder and HDMI streamer, it delivers stable streaming directly from your source, making it ideal for gaming, live events, and professional broadcasting.
- NDI|HX3 Converter Technology: ZowieBox converts HDMI signals to NDI|HX3/HX2/HX, functioning as an NDI video encoder, or NDI Video Decoder for flexible IP workflows. Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Flash Player’s retirement did not retire RTMP. Adobe ended Flash Player support beginning December 31, 2020, and blocked Flash content from running in the player beginning January 12, 2021. Adobe pointed to the growth of open web standards and browser support for alternatives to plug-ins. Those dates mark the end of Flash Player, not the end of RTMP as an ingest protocol. Adobe’s Flash Player end-of-life notice records the change.
What RTMP is used for today
RTMP is used to send a live broadcast from an encoder to a platform’s ingest service. Twitch’s developer documentation describes a broadcaster sending captured video over the internet to Twitch using RTMP, through software or hardware encoding tools or a console. It gives a broadcast URL pattern of rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>; Twitch assigns the stream key as an authorization key. A stream key functions like a credential, so keep it private and never include a real key in a public example or post. Twitch’s Video Broadcasting Overview was checked October 3, 2026.

| Protocol | Security | Codec and use notes | Latency notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Not encrypted | H.264 | YouTube lists it for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. |
| RTMPS | Encrypted | H.264; secure extension to RTMP | YouTube lists it for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. |
| HLS | Encrypted | H.264 and H.265/HEVC; YouTube notes 4K and HDR use | Not suitable for ultra-low latency; segment-based ingest typically has greater latency than RTMP. |
| DASH | Encrypted | H.264 and VP9; YouTube notes 4K use | Not suitable for ultra-low latency; segment-based ingest typically has greater latency than RTMP. |
Why choose RTMPS?
RTMPS sends RTMP through an SSL connection. YouTube says encryption helps protect ingest traffic—including video, audio, and control signals—from interception or tampering in transit. When a platform supports RTMPS, it is the encrypted option compared with unencrypted RTMP.
When HLS or DASH may fit
YouTube’s comparison lists HLS and DASH with codec options beyond H.264, including H.265/HEVC for HLS and VP9 for DASH, and notes 4K use for both as well as HDR use for HLS. The trade-off in that comparison is that neither is suitable for ultra-low latency, and segment-based ingest typically adds latency compared with RTMP. Choose according to the platform’s supported formats and the stream’s codec and latency requirements.

Keeping a YouTube channel live with prerecorded video
RTMP is the delivery protocol, not a way to turn a recording into a live broadcast by itself. To send prerecorded video as a live stream, a compatible encoder or service must deliver it to YouTube using a supported ingest option. If you want a YouTube channel to keep looping uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud service designed for that workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams to YouTube only.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your StreamNeo free day.
