RTMP ingest is the step where a streaming platform receives a broadcaster’s encoded live audio and video. In simple terms: encoder → ingest endpoint → streaming platform → viewers. The encoder sends the signal to the platform; viewers watch the platform’s downstream stream, not the RTMP contribution feed itself.
What an RTMP ingest server does
An ingest server is the platform-side endpoint that accepts an incoming broadcast. The encoder connects to it and supplies the stream key or stream name required by the service. The platform receives and authorizes the broadcast, then prepares it for viewers. Twitch describes its ingest subsystem as the first stop for a broadcast, where streams enter, are authorized and registered, and are prepared for viewers. Twitch’s Video Broadcast documentation describes this workflow.
Ingest is the inbound contribution leg, not the entire delivery system. For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts RTMP or SRT input, then transcodes it and outputs HLS or DASH for playback on viewer devices. Google Cloud defines an input endpoint as the endpoint to which an encoder sends its input stream. See the Live Stream API overview.
How RTMP ingest works, step by step
- Capture and produce: A camera, screen capture, media source, or production setup supplies the audio and video.
- Encode: Encoder software, hardware, or a console packages the live signal using formats and codecs supported by the destination.
- Connect to ingest: The encoder opens a connection to the platform’s ingest endpoint and sends the stream key or stream name that identifies and authorizes the broadcast.
- Platform processing: The service receives the signal and prepares it for delivery. Depending on the platform and workflow, that can include transcoding and packaging into playback formats.
- Check status and publish: Review the platform’s preview or health/status indicators, then start or confirm the broadcast using that platform’s workflow.
What an RTMP URL and stream key mean
The URL identifies where the encoder should send the stream; the key or name identifies and authorizes the particular broadcast. The exact fields vary by platform and encoder. Twitch documents an RTMP URL in the form rtmp://<ingest-server>/app/<stream-key>, where the ingest server is the receiving server and the key authorizes the broadcast. Twitch warns that sharing a key can compromise a channel, so keep it private.

YouTube’s LiveStreams API provides an ingestion URL and a stream name. Depending on the encoder, you may enter them in separate fields or combine them as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. YouTube also documents optional backup ingestion addresses, including RTMPS-specific addresses. Use the fields and format specified by the platform and shown in your encoder; do not assume that every encoder wants the URL and key combined. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference.
Where to enter the RTMP URL and key
- In your streaming platform’s live-stream setup, obtain the current ingest URL or server address and the matching stream key or name.
- In your encoder, choose the platform’s service preset if one is available. Otherwise, select the relevant custom server or RTMP option and enter the endpoint and key in the fields that encoder provides.
- Use RTMPS if the platform supports it and you want encrypted transport. Match the full URL, endpoint, application path, and required port to the platform’s instructions.
- Confirm that the encoder’s audio/video codecs and stream settings are supported by the destination. YouTube’s protocol comparison lists H.264 for RTMP and RTMPS ingest.
- Start the encoder and check the platform preview or health/status indicators before going live. YouTube’s API exposes active, inactive, and error stream status along with health information.
- Keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace or revoke it using the platform’s key-management controls where available.
A dedicated hardware encoder is not required just because the workflow uses RTMP. Twitch lists software encoders such as OBS Studio, hardware video encoders, and consoles among broadcast tools.

RTMP vs. RTMPS
RTMPS is RTMP carried through an SSL/TLS connection. YouTube’s protocol comparison identifies RTMP as unencrypted and RTMPS as encrypted. Its RTMPS instructions specify an rtmps URL, a valid endpoint and application path, and port 443. Transport encryption protects the connection to the ingest service; it does not make it safe to disclose your stream key. YouTube’s comparison was updated 2026-09-14 UTC; check the platform’s current setup instructions for your stream.
| Protocol | Transport security | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | Unencrypted, according to YouTube’s comparison | YouTube lists H.264 and describes it as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. |
| RTMPS | Encrypted via SSL/TLS, according to YouTube’s comparison | YouTube lists H.264 and describes it as suitable for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. Its instructions specify port 443. |
RTMP compared with HLS, DASH, and SRT ingest
RTMP is not the only way to send a live contribution stream, and protocol availability is platform-specific. YouTube documents HLS and DASH ingest as well as RTMP and RTMPS. Its comparison lists additional codec support for those options, including HEVC for HLS and VP9 for DASH, and presents them as better suited to some higher-resolution workflows. HLS and DASH send segments rather than the same continuous contribution stream, so they typically add latency. Consult YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison for the platform’s current details.

Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts RTMP or SRT input. Its best-practices guidance recommends SRT where possible for that service, citing packet-drop recovery, forward error correction, support for multiple audio elementary streams, and higher bandwidth. This is guidance for Google Cloud’s product, not a universal claim that RTMP is obsolete. Choose a protocol supported by both your destination and encoder, taking account of transport security, latency needs, codecs, resolution, and workflow. See Google Cloud’s Live Stream API best practices.
Common RTMP ingest problems and fixes
- The platform receives no signal: Check that the encoder is using the correct current ingest endpoint and that it is running. Re-enter the platform’s URL and key carefully, using separate fields or the combined format required by that encoder.
- The platform rejects the connection or reports an error: Verify that the key or stream name matches the selected broadcast and has not been replaced. Check the platform’s status and health indicators for more specific information.
- RTMPS will not connect: Confirm that the destination supports RTMPS and that the complete RTMPS URL, endpoint, application path, and required port match its instructions. YouTube specifies port 443 for its RTMPS ingestion.
- The connection works but video or audio does not: Check that the encoder’s codecs and settings are compatible with the destination. YouTube lists H.264 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest; do not infer that another platform accepts the same formats.
- The stream key may have been exposed: Treat it as compromised. Use the platform’s key-management controls to replace or revoke it where available, then update the encoder.
- Latency or quality does not fit the workflow: Recheck the destination’s protocol guidance and supported codecs. YouTube describes RTMP/RTMPS as suitable across its listed latency options, while its segmented HLS/DASH options typically add latency; a different platform may have different capabilities.
RTMP ingest and prerecorded 24/7 YouTube streams
RTMP ingest normally describes a live signal sent by an encoder. If your goal is instead to keep an uploaded recording or playlist playing as a continuous YouTube live stream, a cloud service can handle the looping and platform connection without leaving a computer running at home. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only service for that prerecorded-video workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is not a camera-broadcast service.
