Remote NAS access lets you reach services on a network-attached storage (NAS) device from a phone, computer, or other internet-connected device while you are away from the network where the NAS is installed. The NAS needs an internet connection and a configured access path. That path might use a NAS maker’s connection service, router port forwarding paired with a hostname, or a VPN into the private network.
What remote NAS access means
Synology defines external access as “the ability to remotely access your Synology NAS from any device with an internet connection” in its NAS External Access Quick Start Guide, updated June 4, 2026. The general idea applies across NAS brands: a remote device connects over the internet to services that the NAS administrator has made reachable.
Remote access is not automatic just because the NAS is online. The NAS, router or VPN gateway, account permissions, and client app or browser all need to support the chosen path. The method determines how the connection is routed and which services a remote user can reach.
Three ways to connect to a NAS remotely
1. Use the NAS maker’s connection service
A vendor connection service gives the NAS an identifier or link that supported apps or browsers can use. Depending on the product and network conditions, the service may find a direct route or carry the connection through a vendor relay.

Synology QuickConnect is one example. In DSM, an administrator enables QuickConnect, signs in to or registers a Synology Account, and chooses an available QuickConnect ID. A supported browser or mobile app can then use that ID to connect. Synology says QuickConnect uses LAN/WAN detection to select a connection method, may use its relay service, and lets administrators control which applications are accessible. Synology also says end-to-end encryption applies when SSL is enabled. See its setup guide, DSM 7.4 network and external access specifications, and QuickConnect white paper. The white paper’s implementation details may have changed since publication.
QNAP’s myQNAPcloud Link is another vendor-specific example. QNAP recommends it or QVPN for remote NAS access when port forwarding is disabled; the exact features and setup depend on the model and software. Vendor connection services can reduce router configuration, but do not assume every app or service is supported.

2. Combine DDNS with router port forwarding
Dynamic DNS (DDNS) associates a hostname with the network’s external address, so a user can enter a name instead of tracking a public IP address that may change. Port forwarding is a separate router rule: it directs incoming traffic on a selected external port to a particular address and service inside the home or office network. They are often used together, but DDNS alone does not open a route to the NAS.
Synology’s guide illustrates a DDNS hostname followed by a colon and service port. For DSM, it lists 5000 for HTTP and 5001 for HTTPS; those are Synology examples, not universal NAS ports. Check the documentation for your model, service, and software version. Router interfaces differ, and ISP or router changes may mean updating external-access settings. Synology describes DDNS and VPN among its network-management features.

With port forwarding, the router directs selected inbound traffic to the NAS. This can provide direct access to chosen services, but it also makes those services reachable from the internet. QNAP warns that port forwarding can be vulnerable to cyberattacks and advises against unprotected direct internet exposure in its product security guidance.
3. Connect through a VPN
A virtual private network (VPN) creates a configured connection path from the remote device to a private network. Once connected, the device can reach the NAS or other network resources that the VPN’s routing rules and permissions allow. This can avoid forwarding each NAS service individually, but it still requires a VPN server or gateway, client configuration, access controls, and ongoing software maintenance.

QNAP identifies QVPN as an option when port forwarding is disabled, while Synology lists VPN as a network option. A VPN does not configure itself or make every resource available by default; follow current instructions for the NAS, router or VPN gateway, and client.

This comparison reflects manufacturer documentation; it is not an independent security test or a measured speed comparison. The best fit depends on the services you need, the setup you can maintain, and how much of your NAS or network should be reachable.

How to choose an access method
- Choose a vendor service if you want to avoid manually configuring router rules and your required apps or services are supported. Review the vendor’s current connection and encryption settings.
- Consider a VPN if you want remote access to permitted resources on the private network through a configured VPN path. Confirm that you can maintain the endpoint, client configuration, and access policy.
- Use DDNS and port forwarding only with deliberate service selection. Confirm exactly which ports and NAS services the router will expose, and use the model’s current documentation rather than assuming example ports apply to your setup.
Security checks before enabling remote access
Any internet-reachable service needs careful configuration. QNAP identifies internet-borne malware and ransomware as key NAS security risks and recommends remote access through myQNAPcloud Link or QVPN with port forwarding disabled. Synology documents controls for QuickConnect application access and an auto-block feature that blocks IP addresses after too many failed login attempts. These are vendor-specific recommendations and features; check the guidance for your NAS brand and firmware.
