Real-time credit card processing usually means the card issuer returns an approval or decline within seconds. It describes the authorization decision—not the entire payment journey. Clearing, settlement between financial institutions, and the merchant’s access to funds can happen later.
What does real-time credit card processing mean?
At checkout, the merchant’s point-of-sale system or online payment system sends a request through its payment processor and card network to the card issuer. The issuer checks the card and transaction, then sends back an approval or decline. Stripe says this authorization response usually arrives within a few seconds in its Singapore-region process explainer; that is a typical description, not a guarantee for every payment or provider. Stripe’s authorization guide
An approval generally reserves available credit or funds. It does not confirm that the merchant has received the money. To understand what happens after the quick checkout decision, it helps to distinguish the stages that follow.
What happens after the authorization?
Capture: the merchant proceeds with an approved payment
Capture is the merchant’s or processor’s instruction to act on an approved authorization and submit the transaction for processing. It may happen immediately or later—for example, after an order is fulfilled. In Visa’s VisaNet Connect Acceptance API, capture initiates clearing and settlement for a previously approved authorization. Visa says a capture request for that API should be submitted as soon as the order is fulfilled and within 30 days of the authorization request. That limit applies to this API, not every card network or processor. VisaNet Connect Acceptance API documentation

Authorization validity and settlement time are different things. Stripe says most authorizations expire in 5–10 days, while the Visa API has the separate 30-day capture-request limit described above. The applicable period depends on the payment arrangement and the specific service. Stripe’s authorization guide
Clearing: transaction details are recorded and amounts calculated
During clearing, transaction information moves among the merchant-side institution, card network, and issuer so transactions can be recorded and amounts owed calculated. Stripe describes typical clearing as generally batched once daily, though actual timing depends on the setup. Clearing is not the same as the money moving between financial institutions. Settlement: financial institutions settle obligations
Settlement is the process by which financial institutions settle the net obligations created by cleared transactions. Visa’s 2018 guide for U.S. retail petroleum merchants distinguishes clearing from settlement and says VisaNet settles with merchant banks and issuers daily. That is a specific U.S. industry context, not a universal timetable for all card payments. Visa’s U.S. retail petroleum merchant guide
Funding: the merchant receives a payout
After settlement, the merchant’s provider or acquirer makes funds available according to the merchant’s payout arrangement, net of applicable charges. The provider’s payout to the merchant is distinct from settlement between financial institutions. Merchants also reconcile deposits against transaction and payout records. Stripe notes that funding timing varies. Stripe’s guide to payment settlement

Does “real time” mean the money reaches the merchant immediately?
No. In ordinary usage, “real time” points to the quick authorization response at checkout. It does not, by itself, promise instant capture, clearing, interbank settlement, or a deposit into the merchant’s bank account. The complete timeline depends on when the merchant captures the payment, the processor and network, financial institutions, processing cutoffs, and the merchant’s payout arrangement. Stripe’s authorization guide Stripe’s guide to payment settlement
For example, Visa’s U.S. retail petroleum merchant guide says a merchant bank usually credits a merchant within 48 hours of VisaNet settlement. That 2018 description is limited to the guide’s geography and industry; it is not a promise that every merchant will receive funds on that schedule. Visa’s U.S. retail petroleum merchant guide

How to evaluate a processor’s “real-time” claim
When comparing services, look for a precise description of the payment stage and the conditions behind the timing. A quick authorization is useful for deciding whether to complete checkout, but it does not tell you when funds will be available to the merchant.
- Stage: Does the claim refer to authorization, capture, clearing, settlement, or merchant funding?
- Capture timing: Is the payment captured at checkout or after fulfillment?
- Timing commitment: Is the stated timing typical, or is it a contractual commitment?
- Scope: Which geography, sales channel, acquirer, and account arrangement does the claim cover?
Without those details, a single end-to-end timeline can be misleading: authorization may take seconds, while later stages follow different schedules.
