RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol. It carries remote display and input data over a network so you can view and interact with a Windows computer from another device. Microsoft describes RDP as providing “remote display and input capabilities over network connections for Windows-based applications running on a server.” (Microsoft Learn)

How RDP works

An RDP connection links a client device to a remote computer or server. The client sends input, such as keyboard and mouse actions, to the remote system; the remote system sends rendering information back for the client to display. Microsoft’s protocol documentation describes virtual channels that carry presentation data and device communication. (Microsoft Learn)

In everyday use, this makes the remote desktop feel interactive: you can work with the remote computer’s desktop and applications from elsewhere. The protocol transports the interaction; it is not itself the desktop, a particular app, or a guarantee that the connection is secure.

RDP, Remote Desktop, and RDS: what is the difference?

  • RDP is the protocol that carries remote presentation and input data.
  • Remote Desktop is the user-facing ability to connect to and use another computer remotely.
  • Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is Microsoft’s Windows Server platform for delivering managed desktops and applications to users.

RDS can provide session-based or virtual desktops, or publish individual RemoteApp programs. This is a centrally administered model, unlike simply connecting to one personal or work PC. (Microsoft Learn: Remote Desktop Services overview)

What can you use RDP for?

Connect to one remote PC

You can use Remote Desktop to access a work or home computer from another device and use its desktop, files, and applications. For Microsoft’s built-in Windows Remote Desktop setup, the remote PC must run a Pro edition of Windows. The connecting device can run Windows Home or another operating system. These requirements describe that consumer setup, not every enterprise or third-party RDP deployment. (Microsoft Support)

Deliver desktops or applications to a group

Organizations can use RDS to centrally provide managed desktop sessions, virtual desktops, or published applications. This model is designed for organizational delivery and administration rather than a one-to-one connection to a single PC. (Microsoft Learn: Remote Desktop Services overview)

Choosing an access model

Model What it provides Requirements and administration Security and local resources
Remote connection to one PC Access to one remote computer’s desktop, files, and applications. For Microsoft’s built-in setup, the remote PC needs Windows Pro; the client can use Windows Home or another operating system. This is not a universal requirement for other deployments. (Microsoft Support) RDP files may request local-resource redirection, including access to drives. Allow only what is needed. (Microsoft Learn)
Remote Desktop Services Managed session-based or virtual desktops, or published RemoteApp programs. Uses Microsoft’s Windows Server platform for organizational delivery; administration and licensing depend on the deployment. Current licensing prices are not stated in the cited overview. (Microsoft Learn: Remote Desktop Services overview) Microsoft describes TLS protection for RDP traffic and RD Gateway encapsulation in HTTPS, with options to integrate conditional access and multifactor authentication. These controls depend on deployment; they are not automatic assurances for every connection. (Microsoft Learn: Remote Desktop Services overview)

Is RDP safe?

RDP is a capability, not a safety guarantee. In particular, an RDP file can specify a destination and request access to local resources. If you enable drive redirection, the remote computer may be able to read or write files on the redirected drive. Microsoft also warns that malicious RDP files can be used in phishing. (Microsoft Learn)

Responding to an RDP-file warning

  1. Do not open an unexpected file. If you were not expecting an RDP file, confirm with the person or organization that sent it through a separate trusted channel.
  2. Check the destination and publisher. Make sure the connection points to the expected computer or organization and that the publisher is one you recognize. An unknown publisher is a reason to verify the file, not to dismiss the warning.
  3. Review requested local-resource access. Leave drive, clipboard, or other redirections disabled unless you need them and trust the destination. For drive redirection in particular, consider what local files the remote computer could access.
  4. Proceed only when the source and requested access make sense. If you cannot verify either, cancel and ask your IT administrator or the sender to confirm the file.

Microsoft says that, starting with the April 2026 security update, Remote Desktop Connection displays warnings when opening RDP files, and requested local-resource redirections are off by default unless a user opts in. The behavior applies to the Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server versions listed in Microsoft’s guidance and depends on the applicable update and configuration. (Microsoft Learn)

Controls for organizational deployments

Microsoft describes TLS protection for RDP traffic and RD Gateway encapsulation in HTTPS for RDS, alongside integration options for conditional access and multifactor authentication. Those protections require an appropriate deployment and configuration; they should not be assumed for every RDP connection. (Microsoft Learn: Remote Desktop Services overview)

NIST’s 2016 SP 800-46 Revision 2 advises that remote desktop access solutions such as RDP or VNC generally be used only in exceptional cases after careful security-risk analysis. That publication is security guidance, not a current report on RDP vulnerabilities. (NIST SP 800-46 Revision 2)
