RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It is an industry-standard messaging service that uses mobile data or Wi-Fi to add features such as higher-resolution media, typing indicators, read receipts, and richer group chats to phone-number messaging. Whether a conversation uses RCS depends on the messaging apps, devices, carriers, and settings of everyone involved; if RCS is unavailable, the app may send the message as SMS or MMS instead.
What RCS means—and how it differs from SMS
RCS is short for Rich Communication Services. It is a carrier messaging service built around an industry standard, rather than a single app or one company’s messaging network. The GSMA’s Universal Profile sets out a common collection of features and technical requirements intended to help operators deploy interoperable RCS. Its capabilities include chat and group chat, file transfer, audio messages, video sharing, multi-device support, location sharing, and business messaging. GSMA: Rich Communication Services
Unlike traditional SMS and MMS, RCS uses an internet connection—mobile data or Wi-Fi—and can support richer media and interactive features. The exact features available vary by messaging app and implementation: the standard’s full feature set does not mean every phone or conversation supports every feature.
How an RCS message gets from one phone to another
RCS messages are handled through an RCS provider’s infrastructure. In Google’s implementation, Google Messages sends RCS over the internet through Google’s RCS infrastructure. If the recipient uses another RCS provider, Google says its infrastructure routes the message to that provider. Google says SMS and MMS messages, by contrast, continue to be sent through the carrier. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That routing distinction is why RCS is best understood as a standard and service ecosystem, not a universal server shared by every phone. The app, provider, carrier, and recipient all affect how a message is handled.
What RCS adds to everyday messaging
- Richer media: RCS can support higher-resolution photos and videos than conventional SMS/MMS messaging typically provides.
- Conversation signals: Supported apps can show when someone is typing and whether a message has been read.
- More capable group chats: The standard supports richer group conversations, though available controls and features depend on the app and service.
- Additional content types: The Universal Profile includes capabilities such as file transfer, audio messaging, video sharing, and location sharing. A particular messaging app may not expose all of them.
Apple’s support material lists texts, photos and videos, links, delivery and read receipts, and typing indicators for RCS on iPhone. Feature parity should not be assumed across apps or platforms. Apple Support: About RCS messaging on iPhone

When a conversation uses RCS, SMS, or MMS
RCS works only when the necessary support is in place across the conversation. On iPhone, Apple says RCS requires iOS 18 or later and a text-messaging plan from a carrier that supports RCS on iPhone. In Google Messages, Google says every person in the conversation must have RCS chats turned on for messages to go through RCS. App, device, carrier, and participant settings all matter.
If RCS is unavailable, a messaging app may fall back to SMS or MMS, depending on the app’s settings and carrier service. In Google Messages, the compose bar labels the message as “RCS message” or “Text message”; Google says the latter is sent through carrier SMS/MMS. On iPhone, both RCS and SMS/MMS messages appear in green bubbles, so bubble color alone does not identify which service is being used. Check the conversation’s indicators or settings instead.

RCS, SMS/MMS, and iMessage compared
| Service | Who provides or routes it | Features and requirements | Fallback or encryption notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RCS | An RCS provider handles messages over the internet; routing depends on the providers used by participants. | Can support richer media, typing indicators, read receipts, and group features. Support depends on app, device, carrier, and participant settings. | If unavailable, an app may send SMS/MMS instead. End-to-end encryption depends on the specific app, participants, and supported service. |
| SMS/MMS | Carrier messaging service; Google says SMS and MMS continue to be sent through the carrier. | Traditional phone-number text and multimedia messaging; capabilities differ from RCS. | Google says SMS/MMS is not end-to-end encrypted. |
| iMessage | Apple’s own messaging service; it is not the same protocol as carrier-provided RCS. | Availability and features are tied to Apple’s service and supported devices. | Do not infer that a green iPhone bubble means RCS specifically: it can represent either RCS or SMS/MMS. |
Apple describes RCS on iPhone as carrier-provided and iMessage as a separate service. These services are not interchangeable protocols. Apple Support: About RCS messaging on iPhone

Not always. Encryption depends on the particular messaging app, participants, and carrier or service support. Google says RCS conversations between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted by default when both people use Google Messages, have RCS enabled, and communicate over data or Wi-Fi. Google also says SMS and MMS are not end-to-end encrypted. Google Messages Help: End-to-end encryption in Google Messages

For cross-platform RCS on iPhone, Apple’s guidance makes encryption conditional on support from all participants’ carriers. Apple announced on May 11, 2026, that end-to-end encrypted RCS was beginning a beta rollout for iOS 26.5 users with supported carriers and Android users on the latest Google Messages. Apple says an encrypted conversation displays a lock indicator; without that indicator, the RCS conversation is not protected by end-to-end encryption. Availability is conditional and rolling out, so a feature announcement alone does not establish that a particular conversation is encrypted. Apple Newsroom, May 11, 2026 Apple Support: About RCS messaging on iPhone
The standard itself is evolving: GSMA Universal Profile 3.0 specifies requirements for end-to-end encryption of RCS messages, files, and other user-provided content, based on Messaging Layer Security (MLS). That standards work does not guarantee encryption in a given chat; participating clients and services must support and use it. GSMA: RCS Universal Profile 3.0 GSMA: Rich Communication Services

Transport security is not the same as end-to-end encryption
Messages may be protected while traveling between systems without being end-to-end encrypted. End-to-end encryption is the stronger claim that only the participants’ devices can read message content. Apple says RCS is carrier-provided on iPhone and that the phone communicates with the carrier and its partners to set up service; identifiers such as the phone number and, depending on the carrier, current IP address may be exchanged for authentication and connection. Apple Support: About RCS messaging on iPhone
Quick Recap
How to tell what your phone is using
- In Google Messages: Check the compose bar for “RCS message” or “Text message.” The latter indicates carrier SMS/MMS rather than RCS, according to Google.
- On iPhone: Do not use green bubble color to distinguish RCS from SMS/MMS; both appear green. Check the message or conversation indicators and your carrier’s RCS support.
- To check end-to-end encryption: Look for the encryption indicator in the conversation. On iPhone, Apple identifies a lock as the indicator for an encrypted RCS conversation; if it is absent, Apple says that conversation is not end-to-end encrypted.
