Project Orbion is a proposed commercial system for combining satellite imagery, ground-level 3D mapping and AI-generated synthetic data into a shared, continually updated digital representation of Earth. Led by Aechelon with Niantic Spatial, ICEYE, BlackSky and Distance Technologies, it is intended to support AI training, navigation and situational awareness. The plan was reported in September 2025; a confirmed release date, public pricing and measured real-time coverage have not been announced in the cited account.
What is Project Orbion?
Project Orbion is a partnership announced by Aechelon and four other companies to build a commercial, multisensory geospatial data layer: a 3D representation of the world assembled from different kinds of observations rather than one map or satellite feed. EE Times reported the initiative on September 12, 2025.
Aechelon CEO Nacho Sanz-Pastor described the intended database as bringing together cellphone images, reconstructions of places and satellite imagery in one coherent 3D representation. In concept, it resembles a global 3D map, but would combine more sensing types and could be used by both people and AI systems.
“Real-time” describes the project’s ambition, not a verified update guarantee. The report does not specify end-to-end delivery latency, how often every location would be refreshed, or whether the planned system is already available to customers.

Which companies are building it, and what does each contribute?
The partners contribute different parts of the proposed system: Earth observation from orbit, close-range 3D reconstruction, synthetic training environments and a way to display spatial data.
| Company | Reported role | Reported figures or scope |
|---|---|---|
| Aechelon | Leads Project Orbion and contributes synthetic-reality visualizations for human pilots and AI training. | No satellite count or resolution figure stated in the September 2025 account. |
| Niantic Spatial | Builds 3D reconstructions from cellphone and drone imagery and develops visual positioning for places where GPS is unavailable, degraded or jammed. | No coverage or accuracy figure stated in the September 2025 account. |
| ICEYE | Contributes synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) imagery, which can observe through clouds and smoke and in darkness. | EE Times reported 54 low-Earth-orbit satellites in 2025, imaging places about five to ten times per day, with radar products reaching about 20–25 cm ground resolution. These are reported snapshots, not a guarantee for every location or product. |
| BlackSky | Provides high-resolution optical imagery and AI detection and characterization of vehicles on land, in the air and at sea. | EE Times reported 13 operating satellites in 2025, coverage from 60° north to 60° south, approximately hourly imaging of customer-interest areas and about 35 cm resolution. The revisit and resolution figures should not be read as uniform service levels everywhere. |
| Distance Technologies | Supplies light-field 3D display technology, including automotive windshield displays, to present the twin and related data. | No display performance figure stated in the September 2025 account. |
How could satellite imagery and AI make a digital twin?
The proposed system depends on combining sources with different strengths. Optical satellites can provide detailed views in daylight, while radar can collect imagery at night and through cloud or smoke. Cellphone and drone images can add close-range detail that satellites may not capture. AI can help detect and characterize objects, while synthetic data can create controllable environments for training and testing autonomous systems.

Those observations would need to be aligned in a common geospatial representation so that a user or AI system can relate an object or location seen by one sensor to the same place represented by another. Aechelon’s synthetic-reality contribution is meant to turn that combined data into environments for training and validation; Niantic Spatial’s 3D mapping and visual-positioning work addresses the ground-level view. Distance Technologies’ displays would provide one way for people to see spatial information.

The value proposition is therefore data fusion, not that any one partner’s sensor can observe everything. ICEYE CSO Pekka Laurila put the limitation plainly: “No single constellation does everything.”

What could Project Orbion be used for?
Training and testing autonomous systems
Aechelon says synthetic-reality environments could let AI systems practice large numbers of missions before operating in the physical world. Sanz-Pastor described the aim as enabling AIs “to fly hundreds of thousands of missions to validate and test the autonomous models.” This is a proposed training use, not evidence that Orbion has already validated a particular model or achieved a stated performance level.
Navigation where GPS or vision is unreliable
Niantic Spatial’s visual positioning could help locate a device or vehicle in places where GPS is blocked, degraded or jammed, including tunnels and parking garages. A persistent 3D map could also give an autonomous drone a reference when glare or other conditions prevent its camera from recognizing its surroundings. The report presents this as a possible application; it does not establish operational accuracy or availability.

Disaster and environmental awareness
Combining optical imagery, radar and AI analysis could help assess wildfires and floods or track volcanic activity. Radar’s ability to observe through clouds, smoke and darkness can complement optical views, although the usefulness of any assessment would depend on data freshness, resolution, coverage and validation.

The report also describes a possible insurance use: an objective measurement, such as flood depth, could trigger a payment under a parametric policy. That would require an agreed measurement method and a reliable way to connect the data to policy terms; no Orbion insurance product or commercial arrangement is established in the account.

What are the main technical limits?
The sim-to-real gap
AI trained in a simulated environment can fail when real conditions differ from the simulation—for example, because lighting, weather, materials or sensor behavior were represented inaccurately. This “sim-to-real gap” is a central risk for any system that uses synthetic environments to prepare autonomous models. More realistic inputs may help, but the report does not show that Orbion has solved the problem.
Different sensors do not automatically make one reliable picture
Optical, radar, phone and drone data have different resolutions, viewing conditions and update patterns. Combining them requires alignment and cross-checking; a disagreement between sensors or stale imagery could produce a misleading representation. The project’s stated emphasis on multiple sources addresses dependence on a single feed, but does not by itself demonstrate that the fused data will be accurate.
“Real time” needs a measurable definition
A real-time digital twin would need more than frequent satellite passes: imagery must be collected, processed, analyzed and delivered quickly enough for the intended task. The September 2025 account provides partner-level revisit figures, but not a system-wide latency target, guaranteed refresh rate, geographic service level or public access terms. The satellite statistics are time-sensitive 2025 snapshots.

The September 2025 report describes a launched initiative and its intended architecture, not a generally available product with published service specifications. It does not establish a confirmed commercial release date, public pricing or a published market-size estimate. Prospective users would need those details—as well as information on latency, geographic coverage, data access and interoperability—to determine whether the system fits a particular application.
