Power debugging measures a device’s current or power over time and aligns those measurements with firmware execution or system events. It helps developers investigate which activities coincide with high consumption, long active periods, or unexpected idle draw. The phrase can also mean broader system-level diagnosis of power delivery, sequencing, and related hardware behavior, so the measurement approach depends on the problem.
What power debugging shows
In embedded development, power debugging connects a consumption trace to the code or events occurring at the same time. IAR describes sampling power used by the CPU and peripherals and correlating those samples with the application’s instruction sequence, source code, and execution events in its C-SPY power-debugging documentation.
That connection can help identify software-controlled behavior associated with current spikes, repeated activity, unexpectedly long active periods, or excessive baseline consumption. A correlation is a lead to investigate, not proof that a particular line caused the change: reliable conclusions depend on valid measurements, representative workloads, and a trustworthy mapping between the trace and execution.
In a broader hardware context, power debugging can include system-level simulation and physical measurement. AMD’s 2024.2 system integration validation guide groups such work around power analysis and reduction, power distribution systems and networks, and power-on or sequencing issues. These are related but distinct from tracing firmware energy use against source code.

How to correlate consumption with code
- Define the condition. Specify the board, supply path, operating mode, and workload that reproduce the power concern. Keep these conditions consistent when comparing results.
- Measure the relevant supply. Choose the rail or current-sensing point that covers the part of the system you need to understand. Note what is and is not included in that measurement.
- Capture execution or events. Use a tool that records debug data or events on a shared or alignable timeline with the power samples, when the target and tool support it.
- Inspect the trace. Look for peaks, repeated bursts, idle behavior, and the duration of active states. Relate these patterns to the corresponding code or events.
- Test a hypothesis. Change one factor at a time, then repeat the measurement under the same conditions. Treat the result as evidence about the tested setup, not a universal property of the firmware.
For example, a spike that consistently coincides with a communications event suggests a useful place to investigate. It does not establish whether the cause is the firmware, the peripheral, or the board’s power behavior without further checks.
Ways to measure power
The right setup depends on whether the question concerns firmware activity or the board’s power system. AMD’s 2026.1 power measurement techniques lists current-sense resistors, regulator or digital power-controller telemetry, on-board monitoring, and measurements on separate voltage rails as possible approaches.

| Approach | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Current-sensing debugger with code correlation | Relating consumption samples to firmware execution or debug events. | Supported MCU families and debug interfaces, measurement limits, software compatibility, channel count, and how the target is powered through the setup. |
| Board current-sense resistor or rail measurement | Measuring current on a selected supply path or rail. | Which devices the rail includes and whether the measurement point represents the system you intend to evaluate. |
| Regulator or digital power-controller telemetry | Reading power-related information exposed by the board’s power hardware. | Whether telemetry is available and its accuracy for the question. AMD notes that regulator telemetry can be absent or have compromised accuracy. |
| Multimeter, logic analyzer, or oscilloscope | Investigating electrical behavior and interactions in a microcontroller system. | Whether the instrument and measurement arrangement can capture the timing, current, or voltage detail needed for the issue. |
Arduino’s debugging overview names multimeters, logic analyzers, and oscilloscopes as tools for investigating microcontroller-system interactions. A rail-level measurement may help diagnose board behavior, but it does not automatically provide the code correlation offered by a purpose-built power-debugging workflow.
Example: Microchip Power Debugger
Microchip describes its ATPOWERDEBUGGER as supporting specified AVR and ARM Cortex-M SAM targets, with two independent current-sensing channels that stream power measurements and application debug data to Data Visualizer. Its listed AVR interfaces include UPDI, JTAG, PDI, debugWIRE, aWire, TPI, and SPI; SAM interfaces include JTAG or SWD. These capabilities apply to the documented targets and setup, not to every microcontroller.

Microchip’s Data Visualizer Power Debugging module plots current consumption and provides analysis cursors and code correlation. The module requires the Power interface. Before choosing this or another dedicated debugger, verify target compatibility and whether the board can be routed and powered through its measurement channels.
How to judge whether a measurement is trustworthy
- Check the monitored path. A single rail or a target powered through a debugger may exclude other circuitry, so it may not represent total system consumption. AMD’s thermal design note explains that current must be measured on device rails to calculate actual power and cautions that regulator telemetry may be missing or less accurate.
- Check range and capture behavior. The instrument must cover the current levels and time scales relevant to the problem. Microchip notes that locking channel A in its high range can avoid automatic range switching that could otherwise miss short current spikes.
- Calibrate when supported. Microchip says calibration is needed for full measurement accuracy on its setup. Follow the instructions for the specific measurement hardware rather than assuming calibration behavior is identical across tools.
- Repeat under matching conditions. Results are specific to the board, rail, operating state, and workload. If these change between runs, the difference may not be due to the code change being examined.
- Compare energy, not just peaks. Current or power at an instant is not the same as energy consumed over a task. A lower peak can still mean more total energy if the activity lasts longer. Compare the trace over time or integrated energy when the tool provides it; see Silicon Labs’ energy-debugging overview.
When to use firmware correlation versus system-level diagnosis
Use code-correlated power debugging when the question is which firmware activity coincides with consumption, such as an unexpected wake-up, a long-running task, or repeated peripheral use. Use rail measurements, telemetry, or system-level simulation when the concern is how power is distributed, sequenced, or supplied across the hardware. Some investigations need both: a trace can identify when the load changes, while measurements at relevant rails help establish what the board is delivering.
