Percy is BrowserStack’s visual testing and review platform. It captures screenshots of web pages or application states during a test run, compares them with approved baselines, and shows visual differences for people to review. It helps teams catch unintended changes to appearance; it does not replace functional tests or decide by itself whether a difference is a defect.
What Percy does—and what it does not do
Percy is used for visual regression testing: comparing a new rendering of a page or component with a previously approved rendering. A difference can reveal a changed layout, style, font, color, or other visual detail that a functional test may not check.
A detected difference is a review signal, not an automatic failure verdict. A person decides whether the change is intended, should be approved, or needs correction. Functional tests remain responsible for checking behavior such as navigation, form submission, and application logic.
How Percy’s visual testing workflow works
- Create a project. Set up a Percy project for an application or component library.
- Trigger a build. A test, command-line workflow, or supported integration sends snapshots and related assets to Percy.
- Render and compare. Percy renders the submitted snapshots and compares them with the selected baseline.
- Review the differences. Reviewers inspect changes and approve intended updates or request changes before merging.
- Connect review to development. With source-control integration, Percy can report status on commits or pull requests. Teams can configure builds to block a merge pending review.
Projects, builds, snapshots, and baselines
How the pieces fit together
A project organizes visual testing for an application or component library. Each build groups snapshots from a run and can include metadata such as commit and pull-request details when a repository is linked. Snapshots are the captured page or application states Percy renders and checks.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why branch behavior matters
Baselines determine what a new snapshot is compared against. Percy’s documented workflow carries approved snapshots forward into later builds on the branch. The main branch is auto-approved by default, though project settings can change that behavior. Teams should understand their project’s baseline and approval settings before relying on a visual build as a merge gate.
Build history and retention
As stated in Percy’s documentation checked on October 3, 2026, free-plan builds expire after 30 days, while other plans include one year of build history. Retention is a plan detail that may change; confirm the current terms before choosing a plan or relying on old builds for audits.

Frameworks and integrations
Percy’s documented integration ecosystem includes Selenium, Playwright, Cypress, Puppeteer, Ember, Storybook, React Styleguidist, Gatsby, Jekyll, Appium, Tricentis Tosca, Maestro, and a build-your-own SDK path. BrowserStack also describes integrations across CI/CD, source control, design tools, automation frameworks, and collaboration workflows. Support for a framework does not mean every combination has identical capabilities or setup; check the documentation for the specific framework and workflow you use.
Using Percy with Playwright
Playwright is among Percy’s documented integrations. The general pattern is to run your Playwright tests, capture the intended page states through the Percy integration, and let the resulting build compare them with the project’s baselines. Confirm the current setup steps for your language, package version, and CI environment in Percy’s official documentation.

Cross-browser coverage and screenshot usage
Percy’s cross-browser documentation lists Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Browser selection can be managed through Percy project settings or BrowserStack Automate. With Percy-managed rendering, Percy uses its own infrastructure and fixed operating systems. BrowserStack Automate can specify operating-system and browser details when OS-level rendering differences matter.
Each browser snapshot counts separately toward monthly screenshot usage. A page checked in several browsers therefore consumes more usage than the same page captured in one browser. Browser versions and update cadence can change, so verify the available versions and current plan allowance when planning coverage.

Pricing and plan details to verify
BrowserStack’s Percy product page stated a free-plan allowance of 5,000 screenshots per month when checked on October 3, 2026. That is a current-page claim, not a permanent entitlement. Plan limits, pricing, retention, and feature packaging can change; consult the current pricing page before estimating cost or selecting a plan.

- Your team wants screenshot comparisons tied to test runs, source control, and pull-request review.
- You need humans to review visual changes rather than treating every pixel difference as a defect.
- Your automation framework and rendering requirements fit Percy’s documented integrations and browser options.
- You can manage snapshot usage, baseline approvals, and build retention as part of the team’s testing workflow.
For a basic need to fetch a website screenshot as an image or PDF, rather than maintain visual baselines and review diffs, a screenshot API is a different kind of tool. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it captures pages but is not a Percy-style baseline review system.
