PayFi—short for “payment finance”—is an umbrella term for combining blockchain-based payments, often using stablecoins, with financial services such as credit, payment financing, and liquidity management. It is not one protocol or standard workflow: a stablecoin transfer moves value, while financing supplies liquidity around a payment.
How does PayFi work?
A PayFi service may use a blockchain to transfer or settle a digital asset, and may use smart contracts to automate conditions attached to the transfer or a related financial product. The exact arrangement varies. There is no single transaction sequence shared by every service described as PayFi.
- Payment value is represented digitally. A service may use a stablecoin—a digital token designed to track a reference currency—or another blockchain asset.
- A blockchain records a transfer or settlement. The network processes the on-chain transaction. The payment provider, wallet, or other service may handle the user-facing payment and integration.
- Other services may be layered around the payment. A provider can arrange financing or liquidity so a business pays a supplier or completes a cross-border payment sooner. That financing is separate from the token transfer itself.
- A recipient may need a further payout step. Receiving a stablecoin on-chain is not the same as receiving local currency in a bank account. Conversion, payout partners, supported currencies, timing, and fees depend on the service and corridor.
This distinction is central: blockchain settlement describes how value moves on a network; payment finance describes credit or liquidity associated with a payment flow.
PayFi compared with a stablecoin payment
| Question | Stablecoin payment or settlement | Payment financing |
|---|---|---|
| What does it do? | Transfers or settles tokenized value on a blockchain. | Provides liquidity or credit around a payment, such as funding a payout earlier. |
| What is the immediate result? | A token transfer or on-chain settlement is recorded; this does not by itself establish local-currency bank payout. | A business receives access to funds under the provider’s lending or financing terms. |
| Can one exist without the other? | Yes. A stablecoin transfer need not include financing. | Yes. Financing is a distinct service that may use stablecoins for disbursement or repayment. |
PayFi can refer to services that combine these functions, but a provider’s use of the label does not establish that it offers every one of them.

What are the documented PayFi use cases?
Merchant acceptance
Solana describes Solana Pay and stablecoin merchant-payment tooling, including a Shopify app provided by Helio and point-of-sale and wallet-related examples. These are examples of ecosystem tools, not evidence that blockchain payments are accepted by all merchants or cost less overall.
Cross-border payments, card settlement, and treasury movement
Solana’s institutional-payments page lists cross-border payments, card settlement, treasury movement, and global payouts as use cases. It says Visa moved millions of USDC between partners over Solana in live pilots to settle fiat-denominated payments authorized over VisaNet. That is a description of pilots, not a claim that all Visa transactions settle this way.

What do reported PayFi figures show?
The figures below describe different activities and periods. They should not be added together or treated as comparable measures of PayFi adoption.
| Figure | Source and scope | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| $10B stablecoin supply | Displayed by Solana on its institutional-payments page alongside a “Payments Report 2025” label. | The visible page does not specify the exact measurement period or methodology. |
| $200B monthly stablecoin transfers | Displayed by Solana on the same page alongside a “Payments Report 2025” label. | The visible page does not specify the exact measurement period or methodology. |
| $0.0013 median fee | Displayed by Solana on the same page alongside a “Payments Report 2025” label. | The visible page does not specify the exact measurement period or methodology; it is not a comparison of total costs across payment providers. |
| Approximately $500M monthly transaction volume, $140M active liquidity, and $98M in PayFi assets in active loans | Allium and Huma Finance data from September 2025, as reported by Visa. | These are historical, source-attributed Huma figures, not current totals. |
Visa’s 2025 report also describes Huma businesses as typically paying 6–10 basis points per day on an open loan balance, with capital typically repaid within 1–5 days. Those are reported Huma terms, not standard PayFi rates or repayment periods.

What does “PayFi” mean, and is it a formal standard?
The term groups a family of approaches rather than naming a universally defined network, product, or architecture. IOST documentation describes an IOST-specific PayFi design; Huma’s materials discuss payment financing; and Solana describes payment tooling and institutional settlement use cases. One project’s design should not be treated as the definition for all of PayFi.
In a 2024 Huma Finance funding and network-expansion release, Solana Foundation President Lily Liu described PayFi as “the creation of new financial markets around the time value of money.” This is Liu’s framing, not a formal industry standard.

What should you check before choosing a PayFi service?
The label alone does not tell you what a service supports. For a real payment or financing need, assess the operational details:
- Corridors and currencies: Confirm the origin and destination countries, supported currencies, and whether the recipient can receive the asset and payout type they need.
- Settlement versus payout: Identify whether the service delivers a stablecoin on-chain, converts it, or arranges a bank or other local payout—and which partner handles each step.
- Credit terms: For financing, check eligibility, fees, repayment timing, collateral or receivables requirements, and what happens if payment is delayed.
- Integration and custody: Understand what wallets, software, or payment infrastructure are required and who controls the assets at each stage.
- Compliance and local rules: Ask which parties handle applicable checks and confirm requirements for the jurisdictions involved. The cited examples do not establish that every provider or stablecoin is compliant everywhere.
- Total cost and timing: Account for network, conversion, provider, compliance, and payout charges, as well as the time to reach the recipient’s usable funds. A low on-chain fee alone does not establish a lower end-to-end cost or instant payment.
Available examples illustrate particular products and deployments, but do not provide a neutral, jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction legal guide or an apples-to-apples ranking of providers.
