Outlook on the web is Microsoft’s browser-based Outlook for work or school accounts. It lets you use your organization’s email, calendar, and contacts in a web browser. It is different from Outlook.com, which is for personal Microsoft accounts.
What Outlook on the web does
Outlook on the web is a web app: you open it in a browser and sign in with the work or school account provided or managed by your organization. It provides access to organizational email, calendar, and contacts without requiring you to use the Outlook desktop application. Microsoft describes it as the web-based version of Outlook for organizations (Microsoft Support).
Outlook on the web vs. Outlook.com and other Outlook versions
| Product | Account or context | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Outlook on the web | Work or school account | Browser access to organizational email, calendar, and contacts. |
| Outlook.com | Personal Microsoft account | Microsoft’s web-based personal email service; Hotmail accounts are also included in Microsoft’s examples. |
| Outlook for PC or desktop | Desktop application | A separate app with its own features and workflows. Microsoft describes desktop Outlook as its more full-featured email and calendar app for PCs and laptops. |
| Outlook Web App | Older Exchange deployments | A legacy name associated with Exchange Server 2013 or 2010; Microsoft directs users on Microsoft 365 or Exchange Server 2016 or 2019 to Outlook on the web. |
These names are related, but they do not mean that every version has the same features. Microsoft’s comparison describes differences in areas including mail, contacts, and search, so the version that fits depends on the specific task (Microsoft Support comparison).

- Open Microsoft365.com or the Outlook web address provided by your organization. The route and domain can vary by organization or region.
- Choose Outlook if prompted, then sign in with your work or school account—not a personal Outlook.com account.
- If you cannot access the service, check with your organization’s administrator for the correct sign-in address or account details.
Microsoft’s sign-in guidance describes both Microsoft365.com and direct Outlook web access; neither address should be treated as universal for every organization (Microsoft Support).

When the name Outlook Web App appears
If an organization’s instructions or a bookmark say “Outlook Web App,” the label may refer to an older Exchange environment. Microsoft’s guidance distinguishes Exchange Server 2013 or 2010 from Microsoft 365 and Exchange Server 2016 or 2019, for which it uses the name Outlook on the web. The right sign-in page depends on the organization’s setup (Microsoft Support).
