It can reduce blur caused by handheld camera movement, but it does not stop a moving subject from blurring.
How does optical image stabilization work?
Motion sensors detect camera movement, and a corrective mechanism shifts a lens element or the sensor in the opposite direction. In Canon’s lens-based design, gyro sensors detect tilt and an actuator moves a lens group parallel to the focal plane to steady the light reaching the imaging surface. Nikon describes the broader principle as physically moving either the lens or image sensor to counter detected movement.
Because the correction is physical, OIS is distinct from purely digital or electronic stabilization, which processes image data rather than shifting lens optics or the sensor. Designs and correction ranges vary by camera and lens.
Is OIS the same as sensor-shift stabilization?
“Optical image stabilization” describes a result and general approach, not one universal moving part. Lens-based stabilization moves a lens group; sensor-shift stabilization moves the image sensor. Some systems coordinate stabilization in both the lens and camera body.

Manufacturers use different labels. Canon calls its system “IS” (Image Stabilizer), while Nikon uses “VR” (Vibration Reduction). Check the specific product documentation rather than assuming a label or feature applies to every camera or lens.
What does OIS help with—and what can it not do?
OIS helps reduce blur caused by the photographer’s movement, which is especially useful when handheld shooting makes camera shake more visible. Nikon highlights low-light scenes and telephoto lenses; Canon also notes slow shutter speeds, super-telephoto shooting and close-ups as situations where shake can be more apparent.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- It can help: reduce camera-shake blur in a handheld exposure.
- It cannot freeze a moving subject: a person, animal or vehicle can still blur during a long exposure, even if the camera’s movement is corrected.
- Its effectiveness varies: performance depends on the particular camera or lens and the conditions. A manufacturer’s correction rating is not a universal guarantee.
Canon’s Australia glossary defines an optical image stabiliser as a system that compensates for camera shake to reduce blurry photos in handheld photography. Nikon’s technology overview likewise describes physically moving the lens or sensor to correct shake.

How to check whether a camera or lens has OIS
- Look in the camera or lens specifications for a stabilization feature and its exact name, such as Canon IS or Nikon VR.
- Confirm whether the camera body, lens, or both provide stabilization.
- If both do, check the manufacturer’s compatibility information to learn whether that particular combination coordinates corrections.
- For any stated stabilization rating, read the product-specific conditions; do not treat it as a general measure of how much every OIS system can compensate.
