Optic AMOLED is OnePlus’s name for selected AMOLED phone displays that received the company’s own calibration, software tuning and optical refinements. It is a manufacturer branding term, not a separate industry-wide display standard. The name alone does not prove that one screen is brighter, more accurate or better than another AMOLED panel.
What “Optic AMOLED” means
AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) describes the underlying display category. In an AMOLED panel, each pixel produces its own light, so the screen can show very deep blacks without a conventional backlight.
OnePlus added “Optic” to identify its implementation and tuning on certain phones. In a 2016 interview, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei described the OnePlus 3’s Optic AMOLED as mainly “tweaks and calibrations” (XDA Support interview). OnePlus’s own manual separately describes custom gamma corrections and a dual-polarizing layer (OnePlus 3 user manual).
Those statements explain how OnePlus used the label; they do not define a new, standardized panel technology shared across the display industry.

What refinements did OnePlus associate with the name?
Color and gamma tuning
The OnePlus 3 manual says, “Custom-engineered gamma corrections create a more natural viewing experience.” Gamma affects how brightness levels are distributed between black and white, so changing it alters the perceived tone of shadows and midtones. The statement is a manufacturer description rather than an independent measurement.
Polarization and clarity
The same manual says a “dual-polarizing layer ensures ideal clarity.” Polarizing layers can affect reflections and readability, but the wording does not provide a laboratory brightness or outdoor-visibility result.

Color modes and calibration
Official specifications for the OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 6 list support for sRGB and DCI-P3 color modes (OnePlus 3T technical specification; OnePlus 6 technical specification). The OnePlus 6 product page says its calibration focused on color accuracy and brightness (OnePlus 6 product page). These are documented capabilities and claims, not guarantees of identical color performance on every unit.
Sunlight Display software
For the OnePlus 5T, OnePlus announced a software algorithm called Sunlight Display that automatically adapted the Full Optic AMOLED display to harsh light (OnePlus 5T announcement). This is an example of software working with the panel; it does not turn the Optic AMOLED label into a universal brightness rating.

Is Optic AMOLED better than regular AMOLED?
Not automatically. “AMOLED” identifies the display type, while “Optic AMOLED” identifies OnePlus’s branding and implementation. Two phones can both use AMOLED panels yet differ substantially in resolution, refresh rate, peak and sustained brightness, color modes, calibration, reflective coatings and outdoor legibility.

When comparing phones, use the actual measured or documented properties:
- Resolution and size: determine sharpness and viewing area.
- Refresh rate: affects motion smoothness when the specification is documented.
- Color modes: check whether sRGB, DCI-P3 or other profiles are available.
- Brightness: look for independent measurements, including sustained outdoor brightness rather than a marketing label.
- Readability and reflections: consider polarizers, glass coatings and direct-sun performance.
- Calibration controls: check whether the phone lets you select natural, vivid or temperature-adjusted modes.

What the name does—and does not—tell you
It can tell you
- The phone uses an AMOLED panel marketed by OnePlus under the Optic AMOLED name.
- OnePlus applied its own display calibration or software features to the model.
- The specific phone may support documented modes such as sRGB or DCI-P3.
It cannot tell you
- That every Optic AMOLED phone uses identical panel hardware.
- That the display is categorically superior to every other AMOLED screen.
- Its independently measured brightness, color accuracy, PWM behavior or burn-in resistance.
- Whether an older model or replacement part is currently in stock.
Bottom line for buyers
Optic AMOLED is best understood as OnePlus’s historical branding for tuned AMOLED displays. Treat it as a clue about the manufacturer’s implementation, then compare the particular phone’s panel specifications and independent measurements for your priorities—especially outdoor use, color accuracy, smoothness and viewing comfort.
