It is the layer that coordinates access to the processor, memory, storage and devices; it is software, not the physical computer or merely the desktop you see on screen.
What is operating-system software?
The National Institute of Standards and Technology’s CSRC Glossary defines an operating system as “A collection of software that manages computer hardware resources and provides common services for computer programs.” The same entry also gives a definition attributed to NIST SP 800-86: “A program that runs on a computer and provides a software platform on which other programs can run.” NIST CSRC Glossary: operating system
In practical terms, the operating system (OS) sits between applications and the hardware they need. It coordinates access to device resources and provides standard ways for programs to run, work with files, and communicate with hardware. OpenStax describes the OS as core software that manages and controls the interconnection of a computer’s hardware and software. OpenStax, Introduction to Computer Science, §6.1
What does an operating system do?
Manages hardware resources
Programs compete for finite resources, including processor time, memory, storage and input/output devices such as keyboards, screens and network connections. The OS manages and coordinates their use, so applications do not each need to control the hardware independently. Runs and coordinates programs
The OS handles processes—the programs and tasks being executed—and allocates resources as they run. It can also isolate processes, limiting how freely one running program can interfere with another. OpenStax, Introduction to Computer Science, §6.1
Provides common services and abstractions
An application can request services such as file access or device input and output through interfaces provided by the OS. These abstractions give programs a consistent way to use underlying resources without requiring each one to manage every hardware detail itself. Is the operating system the same as the desktop or home screen?
No. A desktop or mobile home screen is a visible interface for interacting with a device, but the OS has broader responsibilities behind it, including resource scheduling, process handling, input/output control and services for applications. The interface is one way to use the system, not the whole operating system. OpenStax, Introduction to Computer Science, §6.1
Examples of operating systems
Common examples include Windows, macOS and Linux on computers, and iOS and Android on mobile devices. These examples span different kinds of devices; the defining role is managing device resources and providing services for programs, not a particular look or brand. Where does operating-system software fit among system software?
The OS is core system software, but the exact boundary between operating-system software and related system software can vary with the definition and the system being described. For a basic definition, focus on its central role: managing hardware resources and providing services or an environment in which other programs can run.
