NVIDIA DLSS 5 is a real-time neural-rendering feature designed to add more detailed lighting and materials to game frames. NVIDIA says it is now available in NBA 2K27 on GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs, and through GeForce NOW Ultimate on NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080-powered rigs. It is not simply an upscaler or a frame-generation feature: its stated aim is visual fidelity, and the way it changes a scene has prompted debate about whether characters and art direction can look different.
What DLSS 5 does
NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 on March 16, 2026, describing it as a real-time neural-rendering model that adds photorealistic lighting and material detail to games. The company distinguishes it from earlier DLSS features associated with resolution upscaling and frame generation: DLSS 5’s announced purpose is to alter the rendered image’s lighting and material appearance, not necessarily to raise frame rates.
NVIDIA says the model uses a game’s color data and motion vectors, drawing on its 3D content to create effects such as subsurface scattering on skin, sheen on fabric, and light interacting with hair. In its September technical description, NVIDIA says the engine-rendered frame, artist-authored geometry, textures, and lighting buffers form the foundation for the result. These are NVIDIA’s descriptions of the system, not independently measured image-quality findings.
The company describes a one-frame-in, one-frame-out process intended to produce deterministic, temporally stable results, with the model running locally on a single RTX 50 Series GPU at resolutions up to 4K. NVIDIA also says richer source information, including ray-traced or path-traced lighting, can improve the result’s accuracy. No independent benchmark figures for DLSS 5 frame rate, latency, image-quality gains, or GPU cost are established here.

Which games support DLSS 5?
Confirmed availability: NBA 2K27
NVIDIA’s September 22, 2026 developer post names NBA 2K27 as currently available with DLSS 5. The game is developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K. NVIDIA says Visual Concepts uses overall tone and style controls plus a per-pixel uplift control mask to enhance character detail while respecting scanned facial geometry. That describes this implementation; it does not establish how every player will perceive the result.
Other announced games are not a confirmed current roster
At the March announcement, NVIDIA named titles including Starfield, Resident Evil Requiem, Hogwarts Legacy, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows among games expected to receive DLSS 5. Those were plans announced at the time, not confirmation that each game has since enabled the feature. Check a game’s current settings or its developer’s announcement before assuming DLSS 5 is available in it.

What graphics card do you need?
For local play, NVIDIA currently names GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs as the supported hardware for DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27. The available material does not identify a particular minimum RTX 50 model, so it is not possible to give a more specific card requirement.
NVIDIA’s September 3, 2026 FAQ search-result text described DLSS 5 as its most computationally demanding model to date and said the company planned to work on expanding official support to RTX 40 Series after further RTX 50 Series performance tuning. That is a stated plan, not a compatibility promise or release date; RTX 40 Series support should not be assumed.

Can you use DLSS 5 through GeForce NOW?
Yes. NVIDIA says GeForce NOW Ultimate members can access DLSS 5 while streaming from NVIDIA-operated GeForce RTX 5080-powered gaming rigs. This is a cloud route rather than local processing on your own GPU. NVIDIA’s current named game in this availability update is still NBA 2K27.

Does DLSS 5 change how characters look?
It can change the appearance of lighting and materials, which may affect how a face, hair, or clothing reads on screen. After NVIDIA showed announcement demos, some viewers objected that characters looked substantially different, citing perceived over-polishing and loss of artistic intent. The Associated Press reported those reactions alongside NVIDIA’s claim that developers have detailed artistic control. The demonstrations and reactions do not establish a universal verdict about every game or a shipping implementation.

NVIDIA says developers can choose among models and adjust Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity, apply semantic AI masks, and use engine-level masks for specific asset groups. These controls are intended to let developers decide where and how the effect applies. They are a design claim, not proof that every implementation will preserve source art to every viewer’s satisfaction.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang defended the feature at a March 2026 GTC press Q&A, saying critics were “completely wrong” and that developers could “fine-tune the generative AI” to fit their style. His response represents NVIDIA’s position in the debate. In the original March announcement, Huang called DLSS 5 “the GPT moment for graphics,” while Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard said the technology could let artistic style and detail shine through and described plans to bring it to Starfield and future Bethesda titles. Those remarks were made at announcement and are not confirmation of current Starfield support.

What to keep in mind before enabling it
- Look for the feature in the specific game’s current settings. An announcement that a title is expected to support DLSS 5 is not the same as confirmed availability.
- Judge the game’s implementation, not just the technology’s name. NVIDIA describes developer controls, but the visible effect depends on how a studio applies them and on the source data it supplies.
- Do not assume a performance boost. NVIDIA’s descriptions focus on visual changes, and the company has called the model computationally demanding. Independent performance measurements are not established here.
