Polynote is an open-source notebook environment that Netflix introduced in 2019 to make data-science work across Scala, Python, and SQL more natural. Its main distinction is first-class Scala support, paired with shared variables between language cells, editing assistance, and visibility into notebook execution. The project currently describes itself as experimental, so teams should check the compatibility and maturity of the specific release they plan to run.

What Polynote was designed to improve

Netflix announced Polynote on October 23, 2019, as an IDE-inspired, polyglot notebook with Apache Spark integration. The motivation was to connect Netflix’s Scala-heavy JVM machine-learning platform with Python’s machine-learning and visualization ecosystem. Netflix said at launch that the notebook had seen substantial adoption among its personalization and recommendation teams; that was a qualitative statement about use at the time, not a current usage figure. Netflix’s 2019 announcement describes the project’s original goals and features.

Rather than treating a notebook as a sequence of isolated code cells, Polynote was designed to combine language interoperability with tools familiar to developers working in an IDE. Netflix’s announcement described five related areas:

  • Cross-language work: Cells can use Scala, Python, or SQL, and the launch post says variables can be shared across languages.
  • Editing help: Interactive autocomplete, parameter hints, inline error highlighting, and a rich-text editor with LaTeX support.
  • Execution visibility: Kernel status, highlighting for running code, and a view of executing tasks.
  • Notebook setup: Dependencies and configuration can be specified at notebook level.
  • Visualization: The announcement described matplotlib and Vega integrations.

Netflix characterized the execution model as promoting reproducibility because cell position affects execution. That design may discourage a notebook from depending on cells run out of order, but it does not guarantee that results will be reproducible in every environment or with every external dependency.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

How Polynote fits Scala, Python, and Spark workflows

Polynote’s clearest use case is a project that needs Scala or Spark alongside Python tools. A team can write some notebook cells in Scala and others in Python or SQL, rather than moving all work into one language. Shared variables, as described in the launch announcement, are intended to let those cells exchange work products.

This does not establish that Polynote is a better general-purpose notebook than Jupyter or Zeppelin. The available project descriptions explain Polynote’s intended strengths, but do not provide a current, controlled comparison of competitors. For a practical evaluation, consider whether Scala/JVM support, cross-language sharing, editing aids, runtime visibility, dependency handling, and visualization match your workflow—and whether the project’s experimental maturity is acceptable for your team.

Current status, compatibility, and maturity

The GitHub repository describes Polynote as an experimental polyglot notebook environment and lists Scala, Python (with or without Spark), SQL, and Vega. The README’s list does not clarify whether Vega is a notebook programming-cell language; Netflix’s launch post presents Vega as part of visualization support, so it is safer not to treat it as equivalent to Scala, Python, or SQL cell types. The project repository is the place to check current documentation and project status.

The project’s releases page lists version 0.7.2, dated January 27, 2026, as the latest release. Specific compatibility details below come from the 0.7.1 release notes and should not be assumed to describe every build:

Scala Scala 2.12 and 2.13 with the listed Spark versions.
Java The runtime was upgraded to Java 17.

These are 0.7.1 release-note details, not a blanket compatibility promise for 0.7.2 or later. Consult the release history and documentation for the exact version you intend to install.

Maintainer comments also call for a careful distinction between internal use and production reliance. In a GitHub discussion, maintainer Jonathan Indig wrote on December 4, 2024, that Polynote was still used at Netflix and that the company deployed internally from the master branch. In the same discussion, maintainer Jeremy Smith said Netflix did not use it “in production,” explaining that he was not a fan of load-bearing notebooks and that there had not been much demand for supporting that use case. Smith also described a high bar for a stable 1.0, including community formation, internationalization, accessibility, UX polish, and ecosystem maturity. These are dated maintainer statements, not a guarantee of present-day use, support, or a release timetable. The discussion is available on GitHub.

License and who should consider Polynote

The project repository lists the Apache-2.0 license. That is the project’s stated license; organizations should assess their own deployment and compliance requirements rather than treating a license label as legal advice.

Polynote is worth evaluating when a data-science team wants Scala to be a first-class notebook language, needs Spark and Python in the same workflow, and values IDE-like editing and runtime visibility. Its experimental status and the dated distinction between internal use and load-bearing production use make it a less certain fit where a team needs a mature, formally supported platform. Check the targeted release’s documentation, compatibility notes, and deployment requirements before adopting it.
