Multistreaming is broadcasting the same live program to multiple platforms at the same time—for example, sending one show to YouTube and Twitch simultaneously. You can send separate streams directly from your computer, route one feed through a cloud relay, or produce the show in a browser-based studio. The right choice depends on your upload capacity, computer, production needs, platform rules, and each service’s limits.
What multistreaming means
YouTube describes simulstreaming this way: “You can go live with the same content across multiple platforms at the same time.” In practical terms, you produce one live program and make it available to viewers on more than one service. It can broaden where people can watch, but it does not guarantee more viewers, engagement, or revenue.
Multistreaming is different from posting a recording to several sites after an event. The platforms receive the program live, at the same time, and each destination may have its own stream settings, policies, and audience experience.
Three ways to multistream
Send separate outputs from a local encoder
Your computer encodes and sends a stream directly to each platform. This gives you control over the encoding workflow, but it can raise CPU or GPU demand and requires enough outbound bandwidth for all outputs. YouTube identifies hardware capacity and control as reasons to choose local encoding.

Send one feed through a cloud relay
Your encoder sends one stream to a relay service, which distributes it to the destinations you select. This reduces the number of separate outgoing feeds your computer must send, but adds a service dependency, possible subscription cost, and plan-specific destination limits. The relay does not remove every bandwidth or quality constraint: your connection to the relay, chosen ingest bitrate, and destination requirements still matter.
Restream’s OBS guide describes connecting channels, connecting OBS to Restream, and starting the broadcast from OBS. Restream also describes unified chat and aggregated analytics. These are the provider’s descriptions of its service, not independent performance findings. See Restream’s OBS multistreaming guide.
Produce the show in a browser-based studio
A hosted studio can combine show production and distribution, which may suit creators who value guest participation or integrated comments over maintaining a local encoder workflow. Check its browser and device requirements, supported destinations, production features, and plan caps before choosing it.

Plan bandwidth and computer capacity
Calculate the combined bitrate for direct outputs
For separate local outputs, add the destination bitrates and leave headroom. YouTube’s illustrative example is 6 Mbps plus 4 Mbps, a combined target of 10 Mbps. It recommends upload bandwidth around 1.5–2 times that combined target for stability—15–20 Mbps in that example. This is platform planning guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection or stream will be stable. See YouTube’s “Stream across platforms” guidance.

Before an event, test the connection under realistic conditions, including typical motion and audio, and check each destination’s stream-health indicators while live. A speed-test result alone cannot establish that an entire multistream setup will remain stable.
Understand what a relay changes
With a relay, your computer sends one feed to the service, which forwards copies to the destinations. That changes the creator-side upload calculation: instead of adding each destination’s outgoing bitrate, plan for the feed you send to the relay. The connection to that relay still needs to support the chosen bitrate reliably, and the computer still needs enough capacity to produce the feed.
Check platform readiness and rules
YouTube eligibility and stream limits
YouTube’s help page, accessed in 2026, says a channel must be verified and have live streaming enabled; the creator must be at least 16 and have no live-streaming restrictions within the previous 90 days. First-time enabling can take at least 24 hours. The page also lists simultaneous limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key, with both limits applying. Because platform rules can change, confirm the current requirements before scheduling an event. See YouTube’s “Stream across platforms” page and YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility information.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
You also need active accounts in good standing on the other services you plan to use. Where your encoder requires them, gather each platform’s stream key and RTMP server URL before the event.
Respect each destination’s policies
Read the current rules for every platform you use. Twitch’s simulcasting guidance says not to use Twitch to direct viewers to a concurrent stream elsewhere. Its examples include prompts or links in profile material, banners, QR codes, broadcast titles, go-live notifications, and chat commands. Check Twitch’s Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ for the current policy.
For any destination, confirm that you have rights to the music, video, and other material in the broadcast. A stream being permitted on one service does not establish that it is permitted on another. Platform copyright and live-stream rules apply independently.
Handle horizontal and vertical viewers
YouTube Live Control Room can provide horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 versions of a live stream at the same time. YouTube documents one shared URL and chat for the two formats; vertical streams may also appear in the Shorts feed. Its setup can center-crop or otherwise adjust the vertical layout, and a third-party encoder setup requires the appropriate stream keys and content in each orientation. YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started.

Some features differ by format, including clickable links, ads, 4K broadcasting, premieres, and live redirect. If your event needs both orientations, test the framing, overlays, text placement, and scene changes in each before going live. A center crop may cut off content composed for a horizontal frame. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup information.
Set up a multistream with a local encoder or relay
- Confirm eligibility and policies. Enable live streaming on YouTube in advance, verify your channel, and check the current rules and requirements for every destination.
- Choose the signal path. Decide whether your encoder will send separate outputs directly or one feed to a relay. If using a relay, confirm it supports your destinations and the number of channels on your plan.
- Prepare destinations. Sign in to each platform and obtain its stream key and RTMP server URL if your encoder or relay asks for them. Keep keys private; anyone who has a key may be able to broadcast to that destination.
- Set output and framing. Choose the resolution, frame rate, audio, and bitrate appropriate for the destinations and your connection. If sending separate outputs, add their bitrates when planning upload capacity. For horizontal and vertical output, configure the corresponding formats and keys before starting.
- Test the complete path. Run a private or unlisted test where available. Check audio, image, overlays, framing, destination status, and stream health on each platform—not just in the encoder preview.
- Go live and monitor destinations. Start the broadcast using your encoder or relay workflow, then verify that every intended platform is receiving it. Watch for dropped frames, connection warnings, muted audio, or a destination that fails to start.
Common problems and practical fixes
- One or more destinations drop or buffer. For direct local outputs, the combined bitrate may exceed dependable upload capacity. Lower output bitrates or reduce the number of direct destinations, then test again. For a relay, check the connection and bitrate from your encoder to the relay as well as the relay’s destination status.
- The computer struggles while broadcasting. Multiple local encodes can increase CPU or GPU load. Reduce the workload or use a relay to distribute one encoded feed; a relay does not eliminate the need for the computer to encode that feed.
- A destination never receives the stream. Confirm that the correct stream key and server URL are entered, the destination account is ready for live streaming, and the destination is selected in the relay or encoder. Recheck credentials privately rather than posting a stream key in public.
- The vertical version looks poorly framed. Rework the vertical composition rather than assuming a horizontal center crop will preserve the subject, overlays, or text. Set up the vertical stream before the broadcast; YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream has started.
- The stream works on one service but violates another’s rules. Review the policies for all destinations and remove any promotion or content that conflicts with a platform’s rules. For Twitch, do not use Twitch surfaces or notifications to direct viewers to a concurrent stream elsewhere.
- A feature or destination count differs from an online guide. Treat vendor plan caps and features as time-sensitive. Check the current service page and plan details before paying or building the show around a feature.
Or let it run in the cloud
