Remote desktop infrastructure is the set of systems that hosts desktops or applications and securely delivers them over a network to users’ devices. It includes the session hosts or virtual machines, connection services, identity and network controls, storage, endpoints, and the tools used to manage and monitor the environment. It is an architecture and delivery model—not a single product.

How does remote desktop work?

A user opens a remote desktop client or browser and signs in. A service checks the user’s identity and access, locates an available desktop or application, and establishes a connection to the computer running the workload. The endpoint displays the remote session and sends supported input, such as keyboard and pointer actions; applications run on the remote host rather than on the endpoint.

In Azure Virtual Desktop, Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) carries remote display and input, while broker and gateway services help connect the client to a session host. Microsoft describes RDP as providing “remote display and input capabilities over network connections” in its network connectivity documentation. The precise connection path and transport options depend on the service and its configuration.

What components make up the infrastructure?

  • Endpoint and client: A computer, tablet, phone, or browser displays the session and sends user input. Client availability and names change; Microsoft says Windows App is replacing the older Remote Desktop client for its cloud resources. See Microsoft’s Remote Desktop client overview.
  • Identity and authorization: Identity services authenticate users, and access policies determine which desktop or application each user can reach.
  • Broker or control plane: The broker locates an available desktop or session host and coordinates the connection. Azure Virtual Desktop includes Microsoft-managed broker functionality.
  • Gateway and transport: These services provide the network path for the interactive session between the endpoint and host.
  • Session host: A Windows Server host can run sessions for multiple users. A virtual desktop can instead assign a virtual machine to an individual user. Hosts run the applications and workloads.
  • Profiles, data, and storage: User profiles, application data, and other files need appropriate placement, access controls, backup, and recovery plans.
  • Operations and security: Teams must manage images, patching, capacity, monitoring, access policies, and recovery. Responsibility varies by deployment.

Microsoft’s virtual desktop architecture guide treats networking, host pools, and storage as parts of the overall design, rather than assuming that the desktop host alone is the whole system.

What is the difference between RDS, VDI, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Windows 365?

These terms describe related but different things. Remote Desktop Services (RDS) is a Windows Server role-based platform. Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) describes an approach in which virtual machines deliver desktops. Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 are Microsoft cloud services with different management and desktop models.

Option What it provides Who manages the core infrastructure? Typical design consideration
On-premises RDS Windows Server roles deliver session-based desktops or RemoteApp, and can support VM-based virtual desktops. The organization operates the Windows Server roles, hosts, datacenter infrastructure, and supporting services. Direct control and data locality come with responsibility for hardware, networking, resilience, and operations.
RDS on Azure virtual machines RDS roles and workloads run on Azure VMs. The organization manages RDS roles and workloads; Azure supplies the underlying cloud infrastructure. Cloud scaling and networking are available, but the customer still operates the RDS deployment.
Azure Virtual Desktop A cloud desktop and application virtualization service that supports host pools and different desktop/session designs. Microsoft manages core service components; customers manage deployment elements such as session hosts, images, identity, networking, and data. Plan host pools, identity and network integration, profiles, scaling, and the division of responsibilities.
Windows 365 Dedicated Cloud PCs assigned to users through a SaaS service; Azure Virtual Desktop is used to broker connections. Microsoft manages the service infrastructure; customer responsibilities still include user access and the organization’s configuration and data. Consider the dedicated-user experience, supported regions and features, integration, and licensing.
Other platforms on Azure Desktop and application delivery through platforms such as Omnissa Horizon Cloud or Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. Responsibility depends on the product and deployment. Evaluate existing platform investments and skills, integration, control needs, and current product and licensing details.

Microsoft’s RDS overview describes session-based desktops, VM-based virtual desktops, and RemoteApp. For Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft states that it provides the core VDI components as a service in its service architecture documentation. Windows 365 has a separate service architecture and resilience description.

Should users share a session host or have dedicated virtual desktops?

A shared, multi-session host runs sessions for several users on the same server. It can suit users who have compatible applications and a sufficient trust relationship, but it requires careful separation of permissions and user data. A personal virtual desktop assigns a VM to one user, providing a more individual environment at the cost of operating separate machines. Windows 365 Cloud PCs are also dedicated to users, under that service’s model.

  • Shared sessions: Consider application compatibility, user trust boundaries, resource contention, and how users’ data and settings are separated.
  • Personal or dedicated desktops: Consider whether users need individual configuration, persistent environments, or workloads that are difficult to share.
  • Either model: Test applications and peripherals, assess latency and workload requirements, and plan profile storage, updates, capacity, and recovery.

Microsoft’s Azure Virtual Desktop security recommendations discuss multi-session trust and controls intended to reduce unauthorized access between users.

Is remote desktop infrastructure secure?

It can be designed securely, but security depends on controls across identity, endpoints, networks, session hosts, storage, and operations—not simply on whether a desktop is remote. Apply a layered approach: verify users and devices, limit privileges, segment networks and workloads, protect data, keep hosts updated, and monitor activity so suspicious access can be detected and contained.

  • Require strong authentication and use multifactor authentication and conditional access where supported.
  • Grant users and administrators only the access they need.
  • Harden and update session hosts as managed endpoints; restrict administrative access and separate administrator privileges from ordinary use.
  • Protect profile and application data with appropriate access controls, encryption, backup, and recovery planning.
  • Monitor authentication, host, and service activity, and prepare to respond to a compromised account or host.

For Azure Virtual Desktop, Microsoft advises against direct RDP access to session hosts and describes a reverse-connect approach that does not require inbound ports to be opened for the service connection path. Those recommendations are specific to Azure Virtual Desktop; network design for other products should follow their own security guidance. Microsoft frames its deployment guidance around verifying explicitly, using least-privileged access, and assuming breach in its Zero Trust guidance for Azure Virtual Desktop.

How should an organization choose a deployment?

Start with the work users need to do and the responsibilities the organization can support. Compare options against the same workload and user mix rather than choosing by product label alone.

  1. Choose the session model. Decide whether users can share multi-session hosts, need pooled or personal virtual desktops, or need dedicated Cloud PCs.
  2. Map application and endpoint needs. Check application compatibility, user customization, peripherals, performance, and network latency for the actual users and locations.
  3. Set control and data boundaries. Determine where hosts and data must reside, which identity systems and networks must integrate, and what governance rules apply.
  4. Assign operational ownership. Identify who will maintain images, patch hosts, scale capacity, secure profiles, monitor the service, and handle backup and recovery.
  5. Compare security and resilience. Review identity protections, endpoint posture, host isolation, segmentation, monitoring, availability requirements, and recovery responsibilities.
  6. Model economics for the actual deployment. Compare applicable licenses and infrastructure consumption for the expected concurrency, storage, regions, and support needs. The available product architecture documentation does not establish a neutral, general cost winner.

On-premises RDS generally gives the organization more direct infrastructure control and operating responsibility. Azure-hosted RDS retains customer management of RDS roles and workloads while using Azure infrastructure. Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 shift more service-platform management to Microsoft, but do not remove the need to manage identity, access, data, and customer-configured elements. The right balance depends on the organization’s workload, governance, skills, and operating model.
