It is distinct from MLCommons’s earlier, transcribed English People’s Speech corpus. The new release is unsupervised audio—not a ready-made, human-verified transcript set—and its language counts and speech-duration totals come from processing pipelines rather than a definitive census.
What is the MLCommons million-hour speech dataset?
Unsupervised People’s Speech is a collection of audio extracted from Archive.org, according to the MLCommons dataset catalog. The MLCommons Dataset working group announced the release in collaboration with Hugging Face on January 30, 2025. The announcement frames it as a resource for self-supervised implementations and for improving multilingual automatic speech-recognition (ASR) pipelines. The working group’s announcement begins: “The MLCommons Dataset working group is pleased to announce the release of the Unsupervised People’s Speech dataset.”
“Unsupervised” is an important distinction: the release is audio intended for research workflows, not a collection established to have human-verified transcripts for every recording. Researchers may use it in self-supervised work or as part of ASR pipeline development, but should not assume transcript labels are included.
How large is it, and how many languages does it cover?
MLCommons’s announcement gives the headline size as more than one million hours of audio. It separately reports 821,412+ hours of speech detected by its processing pipeline. These figures describe different things: total audio duration in the collection versus speech duration detected by processing. The second number should not be treated as a revised total for the entire corpus.

The announcement also reports 89 inferred languages. That result came from language identification on material for which the speech-detection pipeline found an utterance; it is not a ground-truth inventory of every language in the dataset. MLCommons notes that additional languages may be present and that some files were not classified. For that inference, the team used NVIDIA’s TensorRT-LLM implementation of Whisper Large v3.

- Most audio files are between 1 and 10 minutes long; the card says only 14 exceed 100 hours.
- The card says 99% of the audio has a 44.1 kHz sample rate. The remainder includes common rates such as 16, 24, and 48 kHz, as well as custom rates.
These are descriptions in the dataset card, not a guarantee that every file has the same duration or format.
How does it differ from the original People’s Speech dataset?
The similar names can be confusing. The earlier People’s Speech release is a supervised English speech-recognition corpus with transcriptions; Unsupervised People’s Speech is the newer, million-hour-scale audio release. Do not transfer the earlier dataset’s transcription status or scale to the newer one.

licenses.jsonlcontains per-file license information.lang_id_results.jsonlcontains language predictions from Whisper Large V3.vad_results.jsonlcontains voice-activity timestamps.
The language IDs are model predictions, and voice-activity timestamps are pipeline outputs; neither should be mistaken for human verification. The project announcement reports that more than 48 TB was uploaded to S3 and Hugging Face using a custom Git LFS-based script. That is an account of the project’s upload effort, not a requirement for an individual researcher to download the full collection.

The Hugging Face dataset card declares CC BY-SA 4.0. MLCommons’s catalog describes the collection as including audio under CC-BY and CC-BY-SA licenses, and the card names licenses.jsonl as the source of per-file license information. These descriptions make it important to check the relevant file’s metadata and applicable license terms before redistributing audio, training a model, or using material commercially. Do not assume every file has identical terms based only on the card’s top-level license declaration.

The earlier supervised People’s Speech page has its own license description; it should not be used to infer the terms for files in Unsupervised People’s Speech.
Do you need to download the whole dataset?
No project-level upload figure establishes that a typical user needs to download all the data. The useful amount depends on the research question, chosen language or files, and whether processing will happen locally or in cloud infrastructure. Start with a selected subset and its metadata; plan storage and compute around that workflow. A high-capacity external drive may help when processing selected audio or derived files locally, but the available descriptions do not establish that one drive can or should hold the complete corpus.
